Deeply pity the children suddenly orphaned
Sharing with the press, teacher Nguyen Xuan Khang emotionally said: when following the tragic news of the flash flood in Lang Nu village (Bao Yen district, Lao Cai province), knowing that there were children who suddenly lost their parents or only had one parent, he could not help but feel heartbroken and promised himself that he would do something to make up for them. And he decided to adopt all the children who were lucky enough to survive the flash flood very quickly after that. He hopes that from now on, the children will be taken care of and educated properly.
Thinking is doing, the teacher immediately contacted and asked the authorities and the Department of Education and Training of Meo Vac district to make a list of children aged 15 and under who survived the flash flood. Teacher Khang and Marie Curie School adopted the children to study until they were 18 years old, by providing 3 million VND/child/month, transferred directly to the parents or guardians.
When he could not have a complete list, he decided to immediately support the cases he had grasped. Among them was Nguyen Van Hanh, a 12th grade student at Bao Yen High School No. 1. After the flash flood, Hanh became an orphan. Through Vice Principal Nguyen Thi Hong, Mr. Khang was able to connect with Hanh by phone.
When he heard that Hanh would not be able to go to school because he had to work to make a living, Mr. Khang offered to adopt Hanh as his adopted grandchild. Mr. Khang also promised to support Hanh's education every month, 3 million VND per month. When he needed more, Hanh could tell "grandpa". At the same time, he asked the vice principal to open a bank account for Hanh so that he could deposit money there every month. He also sent money to the vice principal to help Hanh buy a phone so that the grandfather and grandchild could easily connect and talk.
Sharing about this, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong still cried because she was touched by the kindness of Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang and thought that Mr. Khang was truly a savior of teachers, students and the people of Lang Nu village. “A person in the capital, a complete stranger, was willing to help Hanh when she was in the most difficult and desperate situation. Such a great generosity, it is difficult to thank her enough,” Ms. Hong said.
Author of many charity programs
When mentioning Mr. Khang, many people are no longer unfamiliar with the billion-dollar charity projects that he sent to teachers and students in disadvantaged areas. At the end of February 2024, the project to build a school for people in Meo Vac district, Ha Giang province with a budget of about 100 billion VND was officially launched. The person who had the idea and implemented the idea was none other than Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang.
The new school is called Marie Curie – Meo Vac Ethnic Boarding School. It is expected that 2024 will be the investment preparation stage, 2025 will be the stage for basic construction investment and the school will start enrolling students from the 2026-2027 school year.
During the investment preparation phase, the school will send engineers to the site to survey, design, and prepare project documents. After that, a qualified contractor will be selected to carry out the construction and the final step is to hand over the project to the district for use.
Mr. Khang said that Marie Curie School and he are connected to Meo Vac, Ha Giang as a predestined relationship. In 2021, Marie Curie School started a project to plant 20,000 cajuput trees in Ha Ca village, Khau Vai commune, Ha Giang province.
In August 2022, the teacher, students and teachers of the school visited Meo Vac district to donate textbooks and school supplies. By chance, they learned that Meo Vac district only had one primary school English teacher; while English is a compulsory subject from grade 3.
Receiving a letter "asking Marie Curie School to support teaching English online for the district for 1 year" from the Head of the Department of Education and Training of Meo Vac district, out of compassion for the students, Mr. Khang accepted and started to build a plan to implement the project.
The project of teaching English to third graders in Meo Vac district was carried out by a group of 25 teachers, including 22 teachers who directly taught and 3 teachers who coordinated. At the end of the school year, the project was considered a special success. 2,609 third graders in Meo Vac completed the course as required; of which 4 students participated in the provincial excellent student competition in Ha Giang and were awarded.
Due to the effectiveness of the program and the trust of the leaders, teachers and students of Meo Vac district, the project continued to be implemented by Marie Curie School for another year with this group of students in grade 4.
To address the shortage of English teachers, Marie Curie School and Meo Vac District have also implemented teacher training through the “recruitment” and “socialization” methods. The goal is to have 30 more local English teachers in the next 4 years.
Within the framework of this training program, Marie Curie School will provide a minimum scholarship of 5 million VND per month for each student for 4 years, starting from December 2023. The support amount will be transferred directly to the student's account. The total cost to support 30 students is expected to be about 6-12 billion VND. Mr. Khang hopes and believes that the project will create a long-term source of English teachers for Meo Vac district, fundamentally solving the problem of teacher shortage.
It is known that before the 2024-2025 school year, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training coordinated with Marie Curie School to donate 70 large drums to commune cultural houses, community activity centers, and schools in the city. This is a very meaningful action, contributing to promoting the learning movement of students in the capital.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang was a former Physics lecturer for the Physics major at the University. After retiring in 1992, he founded the Marie Curie Inter-level Education System. Up to now, the Marie Curie Education System has developed to include 4 campuses: My Dinh (Nam Tu Liem), Kien Hung, Van Phu (Ha Dong) and Viet Hung Urban Area (Long Bien).
During his leadership and management, Mr. Khang has made many creative innovations in teaching and learning management through many forms; he has always been respected and affectionately called "Grandpa Khang" by generations of students and parents of the school. After more than 30 years of establishment, tens of thousands of students have graduated from Marie Curie School, contributing significantly to the development of the education career of the Capital.
In addition to his work in education and training, Mr. Khang is also a member of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front. He was honored to receive the Medal "For the cause of great national unity" and a Certificate of Merit from the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front. In 2022, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang was honored as one of the 10 Outstanding Citizens of the Capital.
