4/6 Vietnamese universities fall in rank

The Times Higher Education (THE) rankings announced on June 22 show the rankings of universities in Asia in 2023.

Notably, the top 100 best universities in Asia this year continues to have the presence of Vietnam's representative, Ton Duc Thang University, at 86th place, but down 13 places compared to last year.

This is the second time Ton Duc Thang University has entered the top 100 best universities in Asia since appearing in the THE rankings in 2022.

Asian University Rankings 2023

Thus, in 2023, THE (UK) will only recognize one Vietnamese university in the top 100 best universities in Asia.

Previously, Duy Tan University was in the top 100 best universities in Asia in 2022, ranked 91st, but this year it dropped 15 places to 106th.

In addition, other Vietnamese universities also dropped in THE's Asian university rankings .

Specifically, Hanoi National University will drop from group 251-300 to 301-350 in 2022, and continue to drop to position 351-400 in 2023. Ho Chi Minh City National University will also drop from group 401-500 to 501-600, equal to Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

Hue University appeared for the first time in THE rankings, at position 601+.

Vietnam representative scores high on citation rate but low on research rate

THE applies 13 criteria in the Asian University Rankings, similar to the world university rankings.

However, the proportion of these criteria in the total ranking score has been adjusted to reflect the specific factors of Asia and its higher education institutions.

The 13 evaluation criteria for ranking Asian universities are classified into 5 main groups, with a somewhat different proportion compared to the ranking of the best universities in the world.

Specifically, THE offers 13 criteria to rank Asian universities in 5 groups: teaching (accounting for 25% of the total score, lower than the world university rankings of 30%), research (30%), citations (30%), industry income (7.5%, higher than the world university rankings of 2.5%) and international outlook (7.5%).

Overall, the six Vietnamese representatives scored highly in terms of citation rates, but their research rates were low. Specifically, Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University were rated 100 and 99.2/100 points in terms of citations, respectively. However, these two schools had quite low research scores, only 19.6 and 15.4.

In terms of teaching, most Vietnamese universities have scores ranging from 15.9 to 17.5/100. Hanoi National University alone breaks through with 21.7 points. On the other hand, in terms of industry income, Hanoi University of Science and Technology ranks first with 43.5 points. Ton Duc Thang University leads in the international outlook index with 58.4 points.

Ton Duc Thang University continues to be in the top 100 best schools in Asia

In 2023, THE ranked 669 schools from 31 countries and territories in Asia, including 79 new "faces". In addition to Tsinghua University and Peking University, which continued to hold the first and second positions for 4 consecutive years, China had two more representatives in the top 10. Following them were 3 schools from Hong Kong (China), and Singapore and Japan each had one school. Japan was also the country with the most representatives with 117 schools.

In April, THE also announced the Impact Rankings to evaluate the success of schools in implementing the 17 sustainable development goals of the United Nations.

In the Impact Rankings, Vietnam has 7 ranked units: Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics (301-400); Duy Tan University, Hanoi National University (401-600); FPT University, Ton Duc Thang University (601-800); Phenikaa University (801-1,000); and Ho Chi Minh City Open University (1,001+).

THE (UK) began ranking world universities in 2004 and is one of the four most prestigious and influential university ranking organizations in the world, including: QS (UK), US News & World Report (USA), and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China).
