Australian Navy landing ship and missile frigate visit Cam Ranh Port

On the morning of May 7, the Australian Navy's amphibious ship HMAS Canberra and missile frigate HMAS Newcastle, along with more than 800 officers and crew, docked at Cam Ranh International Port, beginning a visit to Vietnam that will last until May 10.

The visit of two Australian Navy ships is part of the Indo-Pacific Endeavour 2019 (IPE19) Program, which has been organized by Australia in a number of countries in the region since 2017. This is an annual activity to promote defense cooperation in the region, towards a secure and peaceful region as well as building multilateral and bilateral partnerships with countries.

The visit of the two Australian Navy ships contributes to strengthening the friendship and cooperation between the people and armies of the two countries, in line with the Vietnam-Australia Strategic Partnership; affirming the commitment of the two countries to support cooperative efforts for peace, stability and common development in the region and the world.

During the visit to Vietnam, the fleet commander will pay a courtesy visit to the leaders of Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee, visit the Naval Region 4 Command; exchange and share experiences in search and rescue, humanitarian assistance, and disasters between the two navies; participate in sports exchanges with officers and soldiers of Naval Region 4, perform music in Nha Trang City, and participate in a number of local community activities.

HMAS Canberra is a dual-mission landing ship of the Royal Australian Navy. The ship is 230 m long, 30 m high, and has a displacement of 27,000 tonnes. It can carry out landing operations by boat and helicopter for 1,000 troops, along with weapons, ammunition, military equipment, armored vehicles, as well as transport goods for humanitarian relief purposes when necessary.

HMAS Newcastle is a guided missile frigate, capable of air defence, surface and undersea warfare, reconnaissance, patrol and interception.
