Accelerating human resource training and expanding semiconductor industry cooperation

Within the framework of the Vietnam - Asia Digital Transformation Summit 2024, on May 29, the workshop "Cooperation in developing the semiconductor industry" took place in Hanoi .

According to Mr. Truong Gia Binh, Chairman of the Board of Directors ofFPT Corporation, in the trend of digital transformation, green transformation and sustainable development, semiconductors are one of the core technologies for countries to accelerate development. Vietnam has the potential to develop the semiconductor industry but needs to address shortcomings in mechanisms and policies; accelerate human resource training and further expand cooperation and investment opportunities in the semiconductor technology ecosystem.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Le Quyen, Deputy Director of the National Innovation Center (Ministry of Planning and Investment), said that in the world , the semiconductor chip market has maintained a compound annual growth rate of 14% over the past 20 years and has the potential to become a trillion-dollar industry by 2030. It is forecasted that the demand for human resources in the semiconductor field will continue to increase. Major countries in the semiconductor field such as China estimate that by 2030 they will need 400,000 employees, the United States will need 67,000 employees... The project "Developing human resources for the semiconductor industry to 2030, with a vision to 2050" chaired by the Ministry of Planning and Investment has forecasted the need for about 50,000 engineers in the semiconductor industry. Of these, about 15,000 are microchip design engineers and 35,000 are engineers in manufacturing, packaging, testing and other fields. Vietnam needs to train 1,300 lecturers to teach at research institutes, universities, training facilities and enterprises, and expand the training network and training support to about 200 facilities.

Mr. Nguyen Thien Nghia, Deputy Director in charge of the Department of Information Technology Industry (Ministry of Information and Communications), said that to solve the problem of semiconductor human resources, Vietnam not only needs to invest in training but also needs to attract businesses to invest in Vietnam to develop the domestic semiconductor market. Because, although having many advantages in semiconductor technology, Vietnam's contribution to the world in this field is insignificant. "Promoting the formation of a support ecosystem for chip manufacturing enterprises will help Vietnam increase its attractiveness to large chip manufacturing corporations, making Vietnam a country with more semiconductor chip manufacturing activities," Mr. Nguyen Thien Nghia emphasized.
