Launching the initiative "Adequate Nutrition"

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - On the morning of August 1, at the Provincial Center for Disease Control, the Thanh Hoa Department of Health in collaboration with World Vision Vietnam held a conference to respond to Breastfeeding Week and launch the initiative "Enough Nutrition".

Vietnam is one of the typical countries with impressive achievements in the region in reducing the rate of malnutrition, bringing the stunting rate from 56.5% in 1990 down to 29.3% in 2010 and 18.1% in 2024; the underweight malnutrition rate decreased from 41.1% in 1990 to 10.4% in 2024; the wasting malnutrition rate by 2024 is 5.6%.

In the recent period, implementing the direction of the Government and professional guidance of the Ministry of Health , Thanh Hoa province has issued intervention strategies to improve the nutritional status of children, aiming to reduce the rate of malnutrition in all three forms (stunting, underweight and wasting) in each stage.

Statistics show that the province has reduced the rate of stunting malnutrition in children under 5 years old from 41.6% (in 1999) to 34.9% (in 2009) and 23.5% (in 2023); reduced the rate of underweight malnutrition in children under 5 years old to 6.9% and wasting malnutrition to 3.6%.

Besides the positive results, Thanh Hoa is still facing many challenges. After implementing the two-level local government, the province now has 166 communes and wards; with over 1 million people of ethnic minorities living in areas with difficult socio -economic conditions. The rate of stunting in some mountainous and remote areas is still high, with some communes estimating the rate of malnourished children at approximately 30%. Micronutrient deficiencies still exist. In particular, the rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months of life has not met expectations.

Responding to World Breastfeeding Week (from August 1-7), Thanh Hoa province launched the Breastfeeding Week 2025 across the province, affirming the importance of breastfeeding and calling for practical support from families, communities, workplaces and the whole society.

Speaking at the conference, Dr. Do Thai Hoa, Deputy Director of Thanh Hoa Department of Health emphasized that investing in nutrition, especially in the first 1,000 golden days of life, is investing in the sustainable development of human physical, mental and stature. At the same time, he called on the entire political system, social community and each family to join hands to act, spread and replicate typical models of breastfeeding, comprehensive maternity and postnatal care, gradually connecting and strengthening the network of action for a generation of healthy, intelligent and comprehensively developed children, aiming to improve the stature, physical and mental strength of Thanh Hoa people.

Within the framework of Breastfeeding Week 2025, the Organizing Committee held a discussion to share knowledge on breastfeeding with perspectives from agencies and organizations inside and outside the province, nutrition experts with experience in the field of breastfeeding and child care providers.

The “Adequate Nutrition” initiative focuses on core objectives: Raising awareness, improving the quality of nutrition counseling and care services, strengthening inter-sectoral coordination and building effective intervention models in the community.
