On September 5, according to the Bangkok Post, Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra's lawyer, Mr. Winyat Chartmontree, said that the former Thai Prime Minister wanted to continue asking for further pardon on the grounds that he had been seriously ill for many years.

After returning home on August 23, Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra was treated at the high-level ward at the Police General Hospital due to chest pain, high blood pressure and low blood oxygen saturation.

The Thai Supreme Court had previously sentenced Thaksin to eight years in prison, but the former Thai prime minister received a royal pardon on September 1 and will only serve one year. He still needs daily medical checks, so it is uncertain when he will return to prison.

According to Mr. Winyat Chartmontree, the former prime minister is likely to be released early but instead will be placed on probation, including the installation of an electronic monitoring (EM) device.

Thailand's Ministry of Justice said that on important occasions, many prisoners with good behavior and health problems who are serving only one year of sentences will be granted royal pardons.
