Journey to build a "livable city"
After liberation, on October 4, 1975, the Provisional Revolutionary People's Committee of the Central Central Region decided to merge Quang Nam province and Quang Da Special Zone (including Quang Nam province, Quang Tin province and Da Nang town during the Republic of Vietnam period) into Quang Nam - Da Nang province.
At that time, Da Nang was a provincial city, still underdeveloped, with only a few simple beaches, the coast was poor fishing villages, with their backs to the sea. The Han River was only a barrier between the makeshift stilt houses (houses built of bamboo and wood) on the East bank, and the urban center on the West bank. The urban infrastructure was weak, especially in terms of traffic. Before 1975, Da Nang had only two bridges across the Han River, Tran Thi Ly Bridge and Nguyen Van Troi Bridge, mainly serving soldiers. Traffic was degraded, the water supply and drainage system was limited, most residential areas still used well water. Environmental sanitation was not given much attention, spontaneous garbage dumps were mixed with residential areas...
On January 1, 1997, Quang Nam - Da Nang province was divided into two administrative units directly under the Central Government, Da Nang city and Quang Nam province, opening a new development path for Da Nang. In the early days of the separation, Da Nang had to face many difficulties and challenges, from continuous natural disasters and floods to the inherent weakness of the economy. In the late 1990s, Da Nang had limited budget revenue, mainly relying on taxes. GRDP growth only reached about 7-8% per year, lower than the national average.
On October 16, 2003, the Politburo issued Resolution No. 33-NQ/TW on "Building and developing Da Nang city in the period of national industrialization and modernization". Based on that strategy, Da Nang implemented a series of projects, turning the city into a large construction site with hundreds of bustling projects.
The coastal area of Da Nang is covered with new projects, forming coastal boulevards, urban areas, new tourist and resort areas. The stilt houses on the Han River were cleared to form new riverside roads and neighborhoods. Da Nang invested in construction and made its mark with projects such as: Han River Swing Bridge, Da Nang International Airport, Ba Na Hill tourist area, Vo Nguyen Giap coastal road... Da Nang has risen from a class II urban area to a class I urban area in 2003, with urban space expanding 4 times compared to before. The quality of life of the people has also been significantly improved, the happiness index and satisfaction of the people have formed the brand "a livable city".
According to Mr. Vo Cong Tri, former Standing Deputy Secretary of the Da Nang City Party Committee, Resolution No. 33-NQ/TW was a strong "push", building a solid foundation, paving the way for Da Nang to make a breakthrough in development. From a small, narrow urban area with poor infrastructure and economic difficulties, Da Nang has gradually affirmed its role as a large urban area, a locomotive, a driving force for development, and a socio-economic center of the Central Highlands and the whole country.
Towards an international city
On January 24, 2019, the Politburo issued Resolution No. 43-NQ/TW on the construction and development of Da Nang city until 2030, with a vision to 2045, affirming that Da Nang holds an important strategic position in terms of economy, politics, national defense and security of the region and the whole country. The Resolution sets very high expectations, with the goal of "By 2045, building Da Nang city into a large, ecological and smart urban area, a center for startups, innovation and a livable coastal city of Asian stature"...

Currently, Da Nang is actively implementing specific mechanisms and policies approved by the National Assembly to develop the city; at the same time, researching the formation of a Free Trade Zone, a regional financial center, building Lien Chieu Port, and a National Startup Center in Da Nang, etc.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Dinh Thien, former Director of the Vietnam Economic Institute, Da Nang is taking new, strategic and highly feasible directions in developing a high-tech, smart - creative, and highly internationally integrated urban area. Da Nang has also received special support and encouragement from the Central Government, has an outstanding mechanism and is entitled to propose and test new development models. Therefore, Da Nang needs new development capacity, a new and appropriate institutional system and an operating system - talented administrators.
Head of the Management Board of the High-Tech Park and Industrial Zones of Da Nang City, Vu Quang Hung, said that in recent years, high-tech industry has been an economic spearhead of the city, attracting domestic and foreign strategic investors, promoting the development of science and technology in Da Nang and the Central Highlands region. In addition, the National Assembly's permission for Da Nang to pilot the establishment of the first Free Trade Zone and Regional Financial Center in the country will create a new breakthrough for the city's economic development.
Secretary of the Da Nang City Party Committee Nguyen Van Quang stated that today's generations need to continue to inherit and promote the historical values and heroic traditions of the land and people of Quang Nam - Da Nang throughout the process of fighting for independence, building and developing the homeland and the country. In the coming time, Da Nang will continue to maximize its resources and endogenous strength and take advantage of the attention, leadership and direction of the Central Government, support and companionship of departments, ministries and branches to have breakthroughs in socio-economic development.
The city focuses on investing in developing high-quality human resources to meet the requirements of the digital economy and global integration.
