On September 13, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced a reshuffle of the cabinet and leadership of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

The reshuffled cabinet has a record high proportion of women, with five taking on ministerial positions: Foreign Minister, Economic Security Minister, Child Policy Minister, Regional Recovery Minister, and Disaster Reconstruction Minister. The move is seen as a move to reverse the government's declining popularity.

According to Kyodo, Mr. Kishida appointed 11 new faces, while retaining most of the ministers in the economic sector to maintain stability. Regarding the four key leadership positions of the LDP, Mr. Kishida continued to keep the positions of Secretary General Toshimitsu Motegi, Vice President Taro Aso and Policy Director Koichi Hagiuda. Female lawmaker Yuko Obuchi, the 49-year-old daughter of the late Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi, was appointed as Head of the election campaign committee.
