Woman panics as sweat turns blue

Keisha Sethi, 24, began to notice her strange condition when she was 7 months pregnant. Initially, her boyfriend Brad noticed a blue stain on the toilet seat, according to The Sun (UK).

Ms. Sethi also began to notice blue stains on her clothes, blankets, and pillowcases. This left the couple confused as to where they were coming from. "It was like I was bleeding blue ink, I felt like an octopus. I didn't know what it was," Ms. Sethi said.

Fearing that the stains might be a sign of fetal distress, she immediately went to the doctor for a check-up. The results of the subsequent diagnosis revealed that she had a rare condition called chromhidrosis, which causes the sufferer to produce colored sweat. In Sethi’s case, chromhidrosis was caused by a hormonal imbalance during pregnancy, which caused her sweat glands to accumulate lipofuscin, a pigment that causes her sweat to change color.

Chromhidrosis can have many different causes, according to the National Institutes of Health . The condition can cause people to sweat not only blue but also green, black, yellow, and brown. Anyone can get it, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, or geographic region.

Chromhidrosis is harmless but can be embarrassing and distressing, and can even cause anxiety or depression. The condition is usually chronic, but the color of sweat fades over time as the accumulation of lipofuscin in the sweat glands decreases.

There are a number of treatments for chromhidrosis depending on the cause, from applying capsaicin cream to the skin to taking antibacterial medication, according to The Sun.
