On April 30, 1975, the Independence Palace (now the Reunification Hall) was the place where power was transferred from the Republic of Vietnam government to the revolutionary government, ending the war and unifying the country.
In 1976, the Independence Palace was recognized as a special national monument.
Le Nguyen Hai Bang (12 years old) and his family went to Thong Nhat Hall to film a video of him playing the zither on April 30. "When I get to play the zither here on this meaningful national holiday, I feel very proud and moved," Hai Bang said.
People take souvenir photos next to tank 390, the vehicle that crashed through the main gate to enter the Independence Palace on this day 49 years ago.
