It is expected that on November 15, the contractor will start relocating landfill No. 8 in Cai Rang district (Can Tho city) to hand over the construction site for the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway by the end of this year.
On November 8, the leader of the Project Management and Land Fund Development Board of Cai Rang District, Can Tho City, said that the contractor selection has been completed and the relocation of landfill No. 8 is expected to begin on November 15.

"In about 45 days, by December 31, the relocation of the overlapping garbage to build the highway will be completed, in time to hand over the site to the investor according to the direction of the City People's Committee," said the leader of the Project Management and Land Fund Development Board.
According to a report by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Can Tho, landfill No. 8 in Ba Lang Ward, Cai Rang District has an area of 4.3 hectares with a total volume of over 162,000 tons of waste. Of which, the overlapping area that needs to be relocated for highway construction is over 1.7 hectares, with over 67,000 tons of waste that needs to be relocated.
The cost to relocate the overlapping area is about 13 billion VND, from the capital source for site clearance for the highway project.
According to the Project Management Board and Land Fund Development of Cai Rang District, when handling the landfill, it is necessary to dig 7-8m deep and about 46m wide to serve the construction of a road about 145m long and two fish-carrying roads connecting to National Highway 1.
Current status of landfill No. 8 is about to be relocated.
Previously, to ensure the construction of the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway and to resolve the entire landfill, the Can Tho City People's Committee agreed to divide it into two phases.
Phase 1 is carried out by Cai Rang District People's Committee to relocate the amount of garbage overlapping with the expressway project. Garbage will be relocated from the site clearance area to the neighboring area within the existing landfill.
Phase 2 is the project of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to relocate and treat the entire landfill. At this stage, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment has sent a document requesting the City People's Committee to direct the Thoi Lai District People's Committee to prepare a dossier proposing the investment policy for the solid waste treatment project No. 2 at the Thoi Lai District Solid Waste Treatment Area.
To ensure the environment during relocation, during construction, the contractor must install temporary fences around the landfill, arrange temporary roads and service roads.
At the same time, measures must be taken to treat odors, control insects with biological products and have a plan to collect sludge and leachate. The process of transferring waste is divided into 4 layers, each layer is dug up and transported to the waste disposal area.
The Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway project belongs to the North - South expressway construction project in the East phase 2021-2025, divided into two component projects: Can Tho - Hau Giang and Hau Giang - Ca Mau.
The section through Can Tho is 0.6km long, the total length of the connecting route is more than 9.2km. Of which, the section from Nam Song Hau National Highway to IC2 intersection is more than 2.2km long; The section from IC2 intersection to National Highway 1 is 7km long, landfill No. 8 is located at the intersection with National Highway 1.
