Meta's Threads app has officially surpassed 400 million monthly active users, marking a major step in its quest to compete with the "X" platform (formerly Twitter). Threads started as a "quirky idea to compete with Twitter" but has now become a vital platform for open exchange of views, according to Instagram head Adam Mosseri.
Threads launched in July 2023 and quickly became one of the fastest-growing apps in history, reaching 100 million users in just its first five days. However, initial user engagement has since slowed significantly. Despite this, the platform has maintained a steady growth rate: reaching 175 million monthly active users by mid-2024, 300 million by the end of 2024, and 350 million by April 2025.
Threads still lags far behind its rival X in terms of user size. X currently has around 600 million monthly active users, a large community, and a long-standing influence. However, mobile usage data suggests that Threads is closing the gap. A key advantage for Threads is its tight integration with Instagram, which makes it easy for users to forward friends to the new platform, helping to fuel its rapid growth in popularity.
Can Threads catch up to X?
The rivalry between Threads and X has become increasingly fierce over the past two years. Under Elon Musk, X has introduced controversial changes like paid features and relaxed content moderation, leading some users to seek alternatives. Threads has used this opportunity to build its image as a calmer, more curated space for conversation, but experts say the platform needs to develop a distinct voice to avoid being seen as just a “text-based Instagram.”
Other competitors like Bluesky are also entering the social media game. Founded by Jack Dorsey, who also founded Twitter, Bluesky focuses on decentralization and user control through the AT Protocol, which allows users to easily transfer accounts between platforms. While Bluesky’s user base is small at just over 10 million, the platform attracts users looking to escape the large, corporate-run social networks. In addition, niche platforms like Mastodon maintain small but loyal communities.
More than just user numbers
Threads hitting 400 million monthly active users is a notable milestone, but it’s not the whole story. The bigger challenge lies in retaining users, improving satisfaction, and building a unique identity for the platform. Threads has the resources and reach of Meta to continue to grow, but in an increasingly crowded and volatile social media landscape, maintaining and asserting its position will be no easy task.
