At the Paris Air Show, which took place from June 19 to 25 in Paris, the American company Boom Supersonic announced a series of agreements with new suppliers, revealing technical specifications for the Overture supersonic commercial aircraft project and the Symphony engine, according to New Atlas .

The new partners include Italian company Leonardo, Spanish companies Aernnova and Aciturri. In addition, Boom Supersonic also released schematics of the flight systems, avionics, landing gear and engine specifications.

The company says the new fuel system can pump fuel between tanks in flight, shifting the center of gravity to accommodate subsonic and supersonic flight. Modifications have also been made to enable the Overture to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The Overture will feature gull wings and a composite fuselage.

Aernnova is developing the gull wing to achieve better supersonic performance while maintaining subsonic handling. Like many supersonic wings, the Overture’s wings are thinner than their subsonic counterparts to reduce drag and allow for more efficient flight. Leonardo is responsible for engineering the structural components of the fuselage and will act as a partner in the design and construction of the fuselage sections, including the wing boxes. Aciturri is involved in the design and development of the tail section, which includes a horizontal tailfin for better control at subsonic speeds.

The “heart” of the Overture is the Symphony engine, which was shown in Paris as a 1/3 scale 3D printed model. According to Boom Supersonic, the new engine will have a 25% longer lifespan and 10% lower operating costs than the current engine. The Symphony has nearly 16 tons of thrust, a 183 cm fan, three low pressure compression stages, six high pressure compression stages, one high pressure turbine stage and three low pressure turbine stages.

Overture is expected to carry 65 to 80 passengers and can fly at Mach 1.7 (1.7 times faster than sound) or about 2,100 km/h over water. But regulations say that hypersonic aircraft cannot fly at such high speeds over land because of the loud sonic boom. Therefore, Overture will only fly at Mach 0.97 or 1,200 km/h. This model could enter service in 2029.
