On May 16, the UN announced that Secretary-General Guterres will leave New York on May 17 (local time) to travel to Hiroshima to attend events related to the G7 Summit, as well as meet with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio.
Speaking to reporters before leaving, Mr. Guterres said that "it is time" for countries possessing nuclear weapons to declare that they will not use this type of weapon "under any circumstances."
“This is the moment when we must make clear the need to revive the disarmament process, especially nuclear disarmament,” he stressed.
Recent developments in the field of AI are also expected to be discussed at the G7 Summit. In this regard, Secretary-General Guterres expressed concern about the risk of weaponizing AI, especially the trend of applying this technology to weapons systems.
“The idea that one day we will have weapons systems that do not require humans is completely unacceptable,” he said.
Meanwhile, on the same day, White House National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby announced that at the G7 Summit, US President Joe Biden will highlight the importance of nuclear disarmament.
Biden, who has maintained the US vision under President Barack Obama of a world without nuclear weapons, has “long been concerned about the risk of future nuclear war” and wants to reaffirm that stance after arriving in Japan on May 18, according to White House officials.
President Biden is also scheduled to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida on May 18 to discuss ways to “improve bilateral interoperability and cooperation across all military domains,” including air, sea, land and cyberspace.
When meeting Prime Minister Kishida and his South Korean counterpart Yoon Suk Yeol on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, the US President will highlight the importance of the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in the context of Pyongyang's continuous threats and intercontinental ballistic missile tests,
Mr. Kirby confirmed that President Biden will also coordinate with the leaders of Japan and South Korea to ensure that the three countries “possess the appropriate capabilities to defend themselves.”
