On November 4, Dr. Huynh Thi My Hien, from the interdisciplinary department of eye - ear - nose - throat (Children's Hospital 2, Ho Chi Minh City), said that the department recently received and removed a foreign object about 8cm long that had been pierced from the nose to the eye socket of a 5-year-old girl from Binh Phuoc.

The family said that baby H. was eating a grilled meat skewer but was playing around when the skewer suddenly pierced his nose and went up to his eye area.

The family quickly took the child to the local hospital and then transferred him to Children's Hospital 2 in a condition where the outer tip of the skewer was broken off. The wound caused the right side of his nose to bleed and his right eye to become increasingly red and swollen.

After examining the baby's eyes, Dr. Hien assessed that baby H. was stabbed from the right nose into the maxillary sinus and right eye socket, with no damage to the optic nerve and a conjunctival hemorrhage in the outer corner of the eyeball.

Because the CT scan results did not show any radiopaque foreign bodies, the tip of the probe was broken, and progressive eye hemorrhage made it difficult to predict the extent of the injury, the doctor performed a mask-based anesthetic, muscle relaxation, and attempted to remove the foreign body intact.

Dr. Hien said the accident was rare. Most accidents caused by foreign objects often cause throat injuries, the cause is children's habit of sucking on eating utensils or playing around while eating. Most of these accidents will occur in the school-age group from 5 years old and up.

Therefore, when feeding young children, families should provide appropriate eating utensils (spoon, fork, etc.), and absolutely do not let children get into the habit of sucking or playing with their food while eating to avoid similar incidents.
