My Tho flower village during Tet season

HeritageHeritage20/01/2024

Located in the lower reaches of the Tien River in the Mekong River system, Tien Giang is a land of alluvium all year round, forming rich and fertile gardens since ancient times. This place is not only famous for many delicious fruits such as jackfruit, longan, durian, star apple... but also famous as one of the three largest flower orchards in the Southwest, especially bustling every spring.
When talking about Tien Giang flower fields, the first thing to mention is My Tho flower village (My Tho city, Tien Giang province). Located along National Highway 50 through the communes of Dao Thanh, My Phong, Tan My Chanh, My Tho flower village is especially crowded during the Tet holiday because traders and tourists from everywhere flock here.
Locals say that the flower village appeared here before 1975 and in recent years the number of households growing flowers has increased significantly, thereby supplying the market with more than one million pots each Tet holiday.
In My Tho flower village, there are families that have been involved in flower growing for 4 or 5 generations. “Growing flowers is both a way to make a living and a “career” to bring beautiful flower pots to every family,” said Mr. Sau, a garden owner in My Phong commune.
With the development of the Tet flower market, the flower growing area in Tien Giang is increasingly expanding to Cho Gao and Go Cong Tay districts to serve the increasing demand of customers everywhere.
Not only expanding the scale, gardeners also focus on varieties. Many types of flowers with bright colors, different sizes, both native and imported varieties are planted by gardeners from the first months of the year, carefully fertilized, and timed so that the flowers bloom most beautifully right on Tet. The most popular and favorite flowers in Tien Giang are marigolds, raspberry daisies, cockscombs, Dutch daisies, lisianthus, gerberas... The most beautiful scene here is in the morning when the soft mist still lingers on the flower beds. According to the annual schedule, from the 10th of December, the flower gardens are especially crowded with workers. They usually do other jobs but now gather in the flower village to work seasonally. People of all ages, from young to old, participate in many different stages of the garden such as picking up small buds on the main branches or secondary flowers, planting splints, packing boxes, transporting... While working, they chatted, laughed, called each other, and the sound of vehicles made the atmosphere even more bustling. Source link
