They are student Nguyen Huyen Anh - class 6/2, An Thanh Thuy Secondary School (Cho Gao district, Tien Giang province) and student Truong Hoang Trung - class 6A4, My Thoi Secondary School (Long Xuyen city, An Giang province).
Having a rare disease, still a good student
Nguyen Huyen Anh has suffered from iron overload anemia since birth. Her family lives in a rural area in Thanh Hoa hamlet, An Thanh Thuy commune, Cho Gao district (Tien Giang). Since she was 6 months old, she had to have blood transfusions every month, her body was thin, her skin was pale.
Huyen Anh’s father is a construction worker and her mother is a factory worker. Life is difficult, so the little student has to struggle with a serious illness. Every month, the cost of blood transfusions and medicine is about 10 million VND. That is a big challenge with the already low and unstable income of both parents.
Although your health is not good, you are very diligent in doing housework, studying hard and being active in class activities.
Huyen Anh just finished 6th grade with the title of excellent student, making others admire her even more when they know she is suffering from a serious illness and is not in good health.
When asked about her dream, Huyen Anh said she wanted to become a doctor to save people. That is also the spiritual medicine that helps her forget the pain of her illness. So, for her, going to school is always the happiest day because she is gradually making her dream come true.
Sympathizing with her situation, the school also introduced this little student to benefactors. Thanks to that, she has more conditions for treatment, which is also the motivation for her to continue the long journey ahead. But it is still very difficult and if she does not receive support, Huyen Anh is afraid that it will be difficult to persevere because the treatment for her daughter is beyond the family's ability.
Fulfill your dreams, overcome your fate
Truong Hoang Trung has just finished 6th grade with excellent results. He also has three siblings. Truong Thanh Thuy (class 6A3) and Truong Van Bao (class 9A9) are currently studying at My Thoi Secondary School with Trung. The eldest brother Truong Van Nghia is an 11th grade student at Nguyen Cong Tru High School (Long Xuyen City, An Giang).
The parents abandoned all four Trung brothers when the youngest was just over 1 year old. Feeling sorry for the four orphaned children, Mrs. Huynh Thi My Hien - living in group 4, Tay An hamlet, My Thoi ward (Long Xuyen city) - took them in and raised them.
Mrs. Hien has no family, but more than 30 years ago she adopted an abandoned boy as her son. That boy is now over 30, working hard with his mother to raise four children who are not related by blood.
So the whole family of six, they called each other grandmother - uncle - nephew but were completely strangers, only a good relationship tied them together. God loved them, the four children also knew their place and studied hard, were all considered to be obedient and good students. Among them, Trung was the best student, always in the top of the class for the past six years.
Mrs. Hien did not have a stable job, she did whatever she was asked to do as long as she had money to support her special family. Her son was a bricklayer, his job was unstable, so whenever he had free time he looked for another job to help his mother take care of the children. The neighbors knew Mrs. Hien's job, and they loved the four orphaned children even more, so they often helped with this and that to help the family overcome difficulties.
Trung has made a lot of effort in studying. At home, Mrs. Hien praised "my grandson is always understanding, self-motivated in studying, and also knows how to help his grandmother and uncle clean, do housework, and cook". His homeroom teacher also said that he is very obedient, studies well, and is loved by his friends.
Let's fuel our dreams to fly high
The school knew Hoang Trung’s situation, so they provided material support and mental encouragement so that he could study with peace of mind. The local government also supported Mrs. Hien in taking care of the children, giving the family a Great Unity house and a near-poor certificate to help them take care of the four abandoned children.
Meanwhile, Huyen Anh also receives regular support from a number of philanthropists, who give her not only material gifts but also timely encouragement and spiritual support to help her fight her illness and continue going to school.
Sending a letter to the program, the two teachers of the two students only had one wish: that their students would "give wings to their dreams to fly far". Because like flower buds in the storm, each student is still reaching out to welcome the light of life with all their efforts and efforts to overcome difficulties every day.
The Dream Wings Scholarship is implemented by Tuoi Tre Newspaper and Van Hien University with a budget of 19 billion VND over three years. In the first year, the program will award 100 scholarships (4 million VND/scholarship) to middle and high school students from 13 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta. The following years will be for the Southeast, Central and Central Highlands regions.
