The granting of the Certificate of Geographical Indication for Vinh oranges has delighted orange growers in the province with the hope that the orange products produced will be well consumed and is a motivation for orange growers to boldly invest heavily in orange trees in the direction of clean, food safety, and consumer trust. However, due to the decline of many Vinh orange areas, orange growers have destroyed them and switched to growing other types of trees, causing the output of Vinh oranges to decrease day by day.

According to information from the Department of Science and Technology, since November 2022, there have been 10 organizations and individuals producing and trading oranges in the province whose Certificates of Right to Use Geographical Indication for Vinh oranges have expired, but so far they have not applied for re-issuance of the right to use them.

Specifically, these 10 organizations and individuals include: Phung Huyen Orange Production and Trading Cooperative (Minh Ho Hamlet, Minh Hop Commune, Quy Hop District), expiry date November 5, 2022; Phu Quy Farm Joint Stock Company (Minh Thanh Hamlet, Minh Hop Commune, Quy Hop District), expiry date November 5, 2022; Phu Quy High-Tech Company Limited (Hop Thanh Hamlet, Quy Hop Town, Quy Hop District), expiry date November 5, 2022; Xuan Thanh Agricultural One Member Co., Ltd. (Minh Thanh Hamlet, Minh Hop Commune, Quy Hop District), expiry date November 5, 2022.

Xuan Hop Cooperative (Chat hamlet, Nghia Xuan commune, Quy Hop district), expires on November 9, 2022; 3/2 Agricultural Industry One Member Co., Ltd. (Minh Trung hamlet, Minh Hop commune, Quy Hop district), expires on November 14, 2022; Song Con Agricultural One Member Co., Ltd. (Tan Phu hamlet, Tan Phu commune, Tan Ky district), expires on December 25, 2022; 1-5 Fruit Tree Agricultural Cooperative (Binh Thanh hamlet, Nghia Binh commune, Nghia Dan district), expires on December 25, 2022; Tan Thanh Orange Production and Trading Cooperative (Dinh hamlet, Nghia Xuan commune, Quy Hop district), expires on November 5, 2022 and Phuong Thao High-tech Agriculture Co., Ltd. (Minh Tam hamlet, Minh Hop commune, Quy Hop district), expires on December 25, 2022.

It is known that the main reason why these organizations and individuals did not re-apply for the Certificate of Right to Use Geographical Indication for Vinh oranges is because the area has decreased sharply and the quality of the oranges is not guaranteed.

Mr. Le Viet Minh - Director of Xuan Thanh Agricultural One Member Co., Ltd. said: Previously, the area was still large and the fruit quality was good, so the issuance of a Certificate of Right to Use Geographical Indication of Vinh Orange was an opportunity to increase the value of orange products. However, the orange trees are currently degenerating; at its peak, the unit had nearly 1,000 hectares of oranges, but now there are only 8 hectares left. To find an orange garden that is truly Vinh orange is no longer possible, that is the reason the unit has not yet applied for a re-issuance of the Certificate of Right to Use Geographical Indication of Vinh Orange.

Mr. Pham Hong Hai - Head of the Department of Technology Management (Department of Science and Technology) said: Organizations and individuals producing and trading Vinh oranges have had their Certificates of Right to Use Geographical Indication of Vinh Oranges expire since 2022, but up to now they have not applied for re-issuance of the right to use it because many areas of oranges have degenerated and are no longer capable of producing and trading Vinh oranges. "According to regulations, the Certificate of Right to Use Geographical Indication of Vinh Oranges is valid for 5 years. After the expiration date, organizations and individuals who want to be re-issued must submit an application. However, from 2022 to now, we have not received any requests from organizations or individuals," said Mr. Hai.

In 2017, the Intellectual Property Office certified the geographical indication area for Vinh oranges, which includes 12 communes in 5 districts: Tan Ky, Quy Hop, Hung Nguyen, Nghi Loc, Nghia Dan with 3 orange varieties Xa Doai, Van Du, Song Con with an area of over 1,600 hectares.

By 2019, the Department of Intellectual Property had issued Decision No. 5004/QD-SHTT dated October 16, 2019 on granting additional certificates of geographical boundaries of Vinh oranges to 60 communes in 9 districts and towns, including: Yen Thanh district with 5 communes; Nam Dan district with 4 communes; Nghi Loc district with 7 communes; Tan Ky district with 6 communes; Nghia Dan district with 4 communes; Quy Hop district with 4 communes; Thai Hoa town with 4 communes; Thanh Chuong district with 5 communes; Anh Son district with 11 communes; Con Cuong district with 11 communes with a total area of up to 5,214 hectares.
