Allies form action group to support Mike Pence's presidential bid

VnExpressVnExpress16/05/2023

Allies of former US Vice President Mike Pence have formed a political action group to support his 2024 bid.

A super PAC called "Commitment to America" has been formed by Republican allies of former Vice President Mike Pence, CNN reported on May 15. This move brings Mr. Pence one step closer to announcing his 2024 presidential run.

The super PAC includes veteran Republicans like Scott Reed, who was in charge of Bob Dole's 1996 presidential campaign, and former congressman Jeb Hensarling, a close ally from Pence's time in the House.

"Our country is at a crossroads and the Republican Party needs a strong candidate who can win. Mr. Pence has the experience, character, communication skills and credibility to win both the Republican primary and the presidential election," Mr. Reed said.

If he does announce his candidacy, Pence will face a number of challenges in the Republican primary, especially from former President Donald Trump, who is believed to still hold sway over the party. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a rising star in the party, is also expected to join the race.

The rift between Mr. Pence and Mr. Trump after the Capitol Hill riots in January 2021 also caused many Trump supporters to turn their backs on Mr. Pence.

The group supporting the former US vice president appears to have taken this into account when it hired as its executive director Bobby Saparow, who managed Georgia Governor Brian Kemp’s successful 2022 re-election campaign. Governor Kemp won despite being repeatedly attacked by Mr. Trump for refusing to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia.

"We're absolutely confident that with the results we achieved for Governor Kemp, we can do double that for Mr. Pence. You'll see what we built for Governor Kemp go national," Saparow said.

According to sources familiar with the matter, former Vice President Pence plans to focus on the events of the January 6, 2021 Capitol Hill riot to oppose Mr. Trump in the primary election. Mr. Pence first criticized the former US president in March for being wrong and responsible for the riot.

Mr. Pence also began to highlight some policies that contrasted with Mr. Trump, including support for Ukraine. However, he still skillfully praised the achievements of the "Trump-Pence administration."
