The legacy of late US President Jimmy Carter in the eyes of world leaders

French President Emmanuel Macron was among the first foreign leaders to send condolences to the United States over the death of former President Jimmy Carter.


"France sends its most sincere condolences to his family and the American people," AFP quoted President Macron as saying on December 30, adding that former President Jimmy Carter was a persistent advocate for the rights of the most vulnerable and a tireless fighter for peace.

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that Mr. Carter's post-presidency activities, through the former leader's representative, the Carter Center, "have saved countless lives and contributed to promoting efforts to eliminate many neglected tropical diseases."

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called former US President Carter "a lover of democracy and defender of peace" who worked with Brazil to mediate conflicts in Venezuela and help Haiti.

"He will be forever remembered as the defender of the idea that peace is the most important condition for development," according to the Brazilian President.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi called Mr Carter a "symbol of humanitarian efforts" for his role in brokering the historic 1978 Camp David Accords, which established peace between Egypt and Israel after three decades of war.

"His important role in achieving the peace agreement between Egypt and Israel will always be engraved in the annals of history, and his humanitarian work exemplifies the noble standards of love, peace and brotherhood," President al-Sisi shared on X (formerly Twitter name).

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau commented that "Jimmy Carter's legacy is one of compassion, kindness, empathy and effort", about serving the American people and people around the world, according to Reuters.

For his part, Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino expressed his condolences to the family and the American people on the passing of the late President Carter. According to him, the former president's time in the White House was challenging, and important for Panama in negotiating and signing the Torrijos-Carter Agreements in 1977, which transferred control of the (Panama) Canal to Panama.

The government of President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela called the late President Carter an activist for peace and dialogue who contributed to global geopolitics and left an indelible mark on world history.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised the impressive legacy of Mr. Carter, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. "Jimmy Carter's legacy is best measured through the lives he changed, saved and uplifted," according to the Australian Prime Minister.
