Working for hire, young employees want to "steal" the boss's thinking

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí20/09/2023

That is the feeling of a third-year university student shared at the program Dialogue with CEO on the topic "Education - Career path and start-up" organized by the Student Affairs Department and the Center for Business Cooperation, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology.

Without the experience of an employee, it is very difficult to be a boss.

This male student shared that he works part-time at a coffee shop and does many other jobs with the desire to learn and "steal" the thinking, management, and working methods of the owners.

"But unfortunately, throughout my work, I only met employees... who were hired like me, and almost never met managers or owners. So how can I learn from them?", the young man wondered.

This question comes from the fact that there is a lot of advice for young people and new graduates to work for hire to learn the mindset of being an entrepreneur before wanting to be an entrepreneur.

In response to this question, Shark Le Hung Anh - Founder and CEO of BIN Corporation - advised, "Don't think that when you go to work, a teacher or manager will appear like a Buddha to show you how to be a boss."

Learning management skills is hard, finding someone to teach you is even harder. If you are lucky, young people can find a good mentor, but everything must start with each person.

According to Mr. Le Hung Anh, employees first learn about relationships and behavior between colleagues. When they do their job well, employees can be nominated and considered for management positions. From there, employees continue to have more perspectives, ways of working and opportunities to approach management.

This person emphasized that without the mindset and experience of hardships of an employee, it will be very difficult to become a boss. The mindset of being a boss must start with trying and making efforts from very small things, step by step to grow.

The "sharks" are also afraid to say "make money, get rich"

Female student Pham Thi Kim Anh, majoring in business administration, expressed her confusion when now on Tiktok and YouTube she only hears information about "reversing every path I am on".

Kim Anh cited that, for example, the business administration industry was identified by social networks as a "useless industry". According to her, "TikTok is right because it is an industry for rich kids". Social networks also directly stated the opinion of the HR director that "employers rate candidates who participate in many clubs the lowest"...

Mr. Le Hung Anh responded, saying that any field of study is useless or opposing studying any profession is going against the development of education. Every success must start with serious study.

And the fact that a CEO underestimates a candidate who participates in many clubs and social activities does not tell the full picture of a business.

According to Mr. Anh, it is undeniable that the value of a business and of employees is to make profit and make money, but besides that, there are many other values such as creating jobs, creating connections, creating social and community values...

"Profit is the focus, but that doesn't mean other things aren't important. If you only focus on money and don't have a corporate culture, employees will leave and the business will collapse," Mr. Le Hung Anh reassured about the concern that young candidates who participate in many extracurricular activities are easily boycotted by employers.

From his own experience, Shark Hung Anh said that new graduates do not have knowledge or skills but are often more confident than their real abilities. Many of them think that after graduating they are better than many people, but in reality... "after graduating, they are nothing".

The director expressed his opinion that he is very shy and does not like to talk about the issue of "making money, getting rich". He believes that money comes after learning, after one's own efforts.

Students should not let themselves be poor in learning, knowledge, thinking, and lifestyle. Students need to learn well the knowledge at school, learn from outside along with the most important factor of training ethics and attitude, that is the path to success, the path to wealth.
