One of the notable new points when studying the new program is that students do not have to study all subjects as with the 2006 General Education Program.

High school graduation exam students take 2 compulsory subjects and 2 elective subjects.

The 2025-2026 school year is the fourth year that the education sector nationwide implements the 2018 General Education Program at the high school level.

By the end of the 2024-2025 school year, the country will have 2,109 high schools with more than 3.1 million students.

Students entering grade 10 will study 8 subjects and compulsory educational activities: Literature, math, foreign language, history, physical education, national defense and security education, experiential activities - career guidance and local educational content.

In addition, students can choose 4 more subjects out of 9 elective subjects, including: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Technology, Information Technology, Music, Fine Arts, Geography, Economic Education and Law. This regulation creates opportunities for students to develop according to their strengths, reducing the pressure of studying when they do not have to study all the subjects.

In the 2025 high school graduation exam, students will take 4 subjects, including 2 compulsory subjects: math and literature; the remaining 2 subjects are chosen by students from the elective subjects in the program.

The Ministry of Education and Training requires departments of education and training to direct high schools to effectively organize counseling and guidance for students to register for elective subjects and elective study topics, ensuring publicity, transparency, proper procedures, and balance between subjects to maximize the exploitation of the school's teaching staff.

Schools need to increase the arrangement of separate classes according to each selected subject and selected study topic, and be flexible in arranging the number of students per class to best meet the needs and learning aspirations of students.

Besides, schools also need to ensure the assignment of teachers and the construction of timetables between classes in a scientific and reasonable manner, without putting pressure on students and teachers.
