Applying for university and college admission: Need to consider carefully

Hà Nội MớiHà Nội Mới12/07/2023

From now until 5:00 p.m. on July 30 is the time for candidates to register their wishes for admission to universities and colleges in the field of preschool education in 2023. This year is the third year that candidates have registered their wishes on the Ministry of Education and Training's admission system. This year, there are some important adjustments in the admission process and principles, so candidates need to make careful choices.

Should divide into three groups of wishes

This year is the third year that the Ministry of Education and Training has applied the form of online admission registration on the admission system: https://thisinh.thithptquocgia.... Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) Nguyen Thu Thuy noted that candidates must complete all the information correctly and follow the process on the system. First, they must fill in the correct information. If they fill in the wrong information, it can lead to errors that the system still records, affecting the admission results later. Candidates should print the list of wishes instead of viewing it on the system to check for accuracy. The Ministry's system also has a section to check the wishes that have been admitted early to help candidates review when officially registering.

Regarding early admission, many universities have announced admission scores with early admission methods, however, candidates should note that this is not the final result.

To be officially recognized as admitted, you must graduate from high school and register this wish with the admission system of the Ministry of Education and Training.

Regarding the fact that some schools require candidates to put their first choice as their first choice, Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy affirmed that any school that requires candidates to put their first choice as their highest choice is against the regulations. The arrangement of the order of choices is the candidate's right. Candidates put their first choice if that is the choice they like the most and really want to study. "Candidates who are eligible for admission through early admission methods must continue to register their admission wishes on the Ministry's system. If they do not register on the system, candidates are considered to have given up their right to be admitted to that major or school," Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy noted.

Tran Hai Anh, a student at Ngoc Tao High School (Phuc Tho District), is wondering how many wishes she should register to have the highest chance of being admitted. According to admissions officers, although there is no limit on the number of wishes, candidates should consider the appropriate number and have a "strategy" to ensure the chance of being admitted. Candidates need to pay attention when registering for a major or school to the benchmark scores of at least the last 3 years, enrollment quotas, admission combinations... Basically, candidates should divide their wishes into three groups: the group with a benchmark score slightly higher than their ability; the group with a benchmark score equal to their ability; and the group lower than their ability as a reserve.

Consider the sub-criteria carefully.

More than 1 million candidates have just taken the 2023 high school graduation exam and are waiting for the results to be announced. According to the plan of the Ministry of Education and Training, at 8:00 a.m. on July 18, candidates will know their exam scores for each subject. At this time, the selection of subject combinations for admission is mainly based on strengths and academic results at the high school level. However, after knowing the exam scores, candidates need to consider and can change the subject combinations for admission according to the actual exam results. Candidates need to prioritize choosing the subject combination with the highest total score to increase the chance of being admitted. The time from knowing the exam scores to the deadline for registering wishes (5:00 p.m. on July 30) is more than ten days, quite comfortable for consideration and decision.

To simplify the registration process and help candidates avoid confusion, this year the Ministry of Education and Training has adjusted the registration method by major, instead of following the method as last year. Tran Gia Huy, a student at Nguyen Gia Thieu High School (Long Bien District), said that after practicing registration on the system, he found the registration method by major to be clearer and easier to do than having to "brainstorm" to choose from nearly 20 admission methods, many of which have similar names, making it easy to confuse.

It is worth noting that this year, many schools use secondary criteria in admission. Candidates need to carefully read the admission information of the schools they intend to attend to proactively review their qualifications to best meet the school's requirements. In previous admissions, some students registered for admission based on their high school graduation exam results but did not pay attention to the secondary criteria of high school transcript scores, so they were not admitted to their first choice. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully read the admission plan and absolutely must not ignore the secondary criteria (exam subjects, order of preferences, academic results in some subjects...).
