Livelihood diversification

Thanh Long, a commune in the border area of ​​​​Van Lang district, 12 km from the district center, has a border with China of 9,274m. The total area is 3,883.83 hectares, with 12 villages, 708 households and 3,055 people. There are 3 ethnic groups Tay, Nung, Kinh living together. The total number of poor households at the end of 2023 in the commune is 20 households, accounting for 2.82%, the total number of near-poor households is 69 households, accounting for 9.75%, the multidimensional poverty rate is 10.68%.

In reality, the rate of poor and near-poor households in the commune is still high, so the implementation of policies and projects of the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction is of great significance, contributing to reducing the rate of poor households and implementing social security well in the commune.

In 2022, Thanh Long was allocated 450 million VND in capital to implement Project 2 to diversify livelihoods, support breeding cows for breeding and selling for grazing for 4 poor households and 4 near-poor households. To ensure transparency, in August 2024, the commune organized for households implementing the project to select breeding cows at Lua Vang Cooperative, providing breeding cows and bran on the same day to households, with a total of 24 breeding cows (cows), with 7,920 kg of bran and veterinary medicine for 08 households participating in the project.

The Commune People's Committee organized 4 training sessions for participating households on techniques for building barns, planting grass, selecting breeds and techniques for caring for cows for households participating in the project, and supported households in buying grass cutters. The Commune National Target Program Management Board organized 2 inspections of cow raising households under the project to check barns, grass planting areas, health and growth of cows, disease prevention, etc.

According to Mr. Pho Van Dung, Vice Chairman of Thanh Long Commune People's Committee, up to now, the herd of cows has grown and developed well, their health is stable, they eat grass well, they are fattened, developed well and adapted well to the semi-grazing environment in Khau Slung village. Currently, the herd has given birth to 6 cows and 7 are pregnant. The total number of cows at the time of reporting is 29 cows.

In 2024, the Commune People's Committee was allocated 400 million VND to implement a project to raise semi-grazed breeding cows. After 3 meetings to review project participants, 6 poor households registered to participate. Currently, the commune has directly supported cows for households.

Vice Chairman of Thanh Long Commune People's Committee, Pho Van Dung, commented that the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction has created conditions for the poor to access and benefit from policies and resources aimed at developing production to create jobs, increase livestock productivity, and increase income value from production to help poor households rise up.

Help poor households escape poverty sustainably

According to the Report of the People's Committee of Van Lang district, implementing Project 2 on Diversifying Livelihoods and Developing Poverty Reduction Models in 2022-2024, with the Central budget allocated capital of 7 billion 746 million VND, Van Lang district has implemented 17 projects. The projects support poor households, near-poor households, and newly escaped poverty households in the district.

The project of planting medicinal plants (Sho Phuc Linh), with a budget of 432 million VND, was implemented in Tan Tac commune. There were 18 participating households (16 poor households, 2 near-poor households). The project provided 44,600 seedlings and 13,500 kg of fertilizer to the households participating in the project.

The project of raising semi-grazed breeding cows in Thanh Hoa and Thanh Long communes, with a budget of 900 million VND, provided breeding animals to 16 participating households (10 poor households, 6 near-poor households), 48 cows (yellow breed), including 45 female cows, 03 bulls, the herd has given birth to 6 calves.

Project on raising semi-grazed breeding cows in Hong Thai commune, budget of 500 million VND, 9 participating households (04 poor households, 05 near-poor households), the project has provided 27 yellow cows (25 female cows, 02 male cows), the herd has given birth to 02 calves, disbursed budget of 498.32/500 million VND, reaching 99.7% of the plan.

The project "Planting persimmon trees" in Hoi Hoan commune, with an implementation budget of 500 million VND, 26 households participating (10 poor households, 16 near-poor households), provided seedlings and fertilizers to households participating in the project in January 2024. The project of raising fish in cages in Bac La commune 405 million VND; The project of planting persimmon trees in Tan My commune 405 million VND, Hoi Hoan commune 450 million VND; The project of planting macadamia trees in Bac Hung commune 450 million VND...

It can be seen that the effective implementation of Project 2 on Livelihood Diversification and Poverty Reduction Model Development implemented by Van Lang district from 2022 to present has been effective, solving urgent problems in ethnic minority areas, helping poor households, near-poor households, and newly escaped poverty households in the district to have livelihoods, jobs, and self-reliance to escape poverty sustainably.
