The teacher was stunned reading the student's essay: "My father cursed me when I cried."

Ms. NTH asked permission from her students and families to share the essay with Dan Tri reporter.

Accordingly, when asked by the teacher to write two paragraphs in two styles, deductive and inductive, the 8th grade male student chose to write about his mother and father.

The student's paragraph still had many sentence errors, was not really standard in style, and had scribbled handwriting, but what interested Ms. H. was its content.

"Dad is the one who gave birth to us. Dad always scolded and beat us when we were old enough to go to school. Dad is the one who ignored us in our studies.

Dad always sacrificed for his own benefit, when we were sick he still didn't care if we were sick or not. Dad just sat and lay down, didn't give money to mom for months. Cursed us when we cried. Was the one who left us when we made mistakes, was the one who left us even though life had changed.

No matter what dad is like, he is still my dad," the paragraph reads.

When receiving the student's work, Ms. NTH was stunned. The student, who was normally innocent, pure, and somewhat carefree, was carrying in his heart the pain of his father.

"The paragraph about my mother is as sweet as the paragraph about my father is heartbreaking.

But each word did not show that I hated my father, I only felt very angry when he did not care for me. The last sentence made me cry: "No matter what my father is like, he is still my father", Ms. H. shared.

When talking to the student's mother, Ms. H. learned that everything the student wrote was true. The student's father was not a thoughtful person and did not know how to express his feelings to his children, even though he truly loved them.

Ms. H. sent her student's essay home to her family with the hope that her parents would adjust their daily communication with her, so that she could feel the warmth of family love and concern.

"Everyone says I'm a boy, innocent, childish, and don't know anything. But that's not true. Every child longs to hear words of love. Loving too much only pushes children and parents apart," said Ms. H.

Ms. H. added that she always uses traditional topics such as writing an essay about father, mother, or relatives so that students can express their thoughts, and thereby help them connect and heal with their families.

"I encourage students to write freely and honestly. Honest writing is always the best writing.

I remember a student who chose to write about a special mother - her stepmother. I sent the essay to her mother, she was very touched because it was the first time she knew that her husband's stepdaughter had very special feelings for her.

All of her stepmother's care and attention was welcomed and appreciated by the little girl, but she had no way to express it until she received an essay assignment that required her to "write about someone she loves," Ms. H. confided.

According to Ms. H, the new literature program enhances social discussion content, which is one of the factors that motivates students to express their thoughts, feelings, and perspectives on life around them.

Through school essays, parents and teachers have more data to better understand their children.

"This is also an opportunity for literature teachers to use their lessons to cultivate students' emotions, personalities, and outlook on life.

I always believe that literature class is not only about learning to read, write, and appreciate literature, but also about learning how to live tolerantly and harmoniously in the process of growing up," Ms. H. stated her opinion.

From 2025, the 10th grade literature exam in Hanoi will change its format. Accordingly, the exam is divided into two parts: reading comprehension and writing. The writing part accounts for 6/10 points, with the literary essay question accounting for 2 points and the social essay question accounting for 4 points.

Increasing the score of the social argument question to double that of the literary argument question shows innovation in assessing students' abilities in this subject according to the 2018 general education program.
