Indonesian expert rubs salt into home team's defeat

Indonesian football expert Kesit Budi Handoyo said that it is understandable and indisputable that U23 Indonesia lost to Vietnam in the final of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship.

Mr. Kesit Budi Handoyo commented that U23 Indonesia did not perform well enough to defeat Vietnam.

Despite controlling the ball up to 68%, U23 Indonesia could not create a worthy threat. Even when overcoming Vietnam's defense, U23 Indonesia's strikers still let the opportunity pass by regrettably.

Expert Handoyo admitted that U23 Indonesia is not creative enough in attack. And they are too dependent on throw-in situations, which have been predicted by U23 Vietnam.

The absence of the midfield duo Tony Firmansyah and Arkhan Fikri caused U23 Indonesia to lose balance. The U23 Indonesia midfield was not strong enough to overwhelm the Vietnamese midfield. And this caused the attack to be completely divided.

"Key striker Jens Raven did not have much of the ball, causing attacks to often stall before reaching the U23 Vietnam penalty area.

The opponent (U23 Vietnam) was successful in blocking U23 Indonesia's attacks and cutting off the ball circulation in the middle of the field" - Mr. Handoyo emphasized.

Expert Handoyo affirmed: "U23 Indonesia deserved to lose, considering their unconvincing performance against Vietnam, a team that I believe was much better prepared. The performance of the Indonesian players has not changed positively enough since the draw with U23 Malaysia. Compared to the match against Thailand, U23 Indonesia has not improved when facing Vietnam."

The reason why U23 Indonesia could not improve their playing style was due to poor player skills and insufficient preparation time, Mr. Handoyo commented.
