New scam: Hiding behind livestreams, impersonating delivery staff to steal money

Báo Tuổi TrẻBáo Tuổi Trẻ22/06/2024

Specifically, the subjects impersonated delivery staff (economy delivery, express delivery...) and called customers to inform them of online orders, then asked them to transfer payment to appropriate the money.

The subject's method is to participate in livestream sales sessions on social networking platforms (Facebook, TikTok...) to identify customers who have ordered products.

The subjects obtained customers' contact information and ordered items from comments or public messages on livestreams.

After collecting personal information and orders from livestreams, the subject will call customers, claiming to be a delivery staff (economy delivery, express delivery...) of the sales unit where the customer purchased the product.

The subjects often choose a time when the customer is not at home (office hours) to call. If the customer says he is not at home, the subject will lead the "prey" to give the address (acquaintance, neighbor, friend...) to send the goods; then ask the customer to transfer money to pay for the order. Upon receiving the money, the subject will appropriate it and cut off contact with the customer.

To prevent the above tricks, the Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention Department, Hanoi City Police, recommends that people when buying goods on social networking platforms should pay attention: Before transferring payment for an order, customers need to carefully check the information of the caller and confirm with the sales unit or official delivery service. People should only transfer money after directly receiving and checking the goods; avoid transferring money to personal accounts or unclear accounts.

People should limit sharing personal information, addresses and phone numbers publicly on social networks or during livestreams; use private messaging channels or secure systems to exchange order information with sellers.

Hanoi City Police advise people to be wary of sudden and unclear money transfer requests that "pressure" them to transfer money immediately.

Buyers should confirm with the seller through official channels before making any transaction. If they discover or suspect fraud, they should promptly report to the police for timely resolution.
