A special passion for literature and poetry

Thien was a student in the specialized math class at Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted (Binh Dinh province). He is currently living in Ho Chi Minh City and has just graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry after 6 years of studying at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City.

Thien's previous education path and future career orientation are both related to natural sciences. However, thanks to his romantic, soaring soul, Thien has a connection with literature and poetry. This young man often jokes that it is his second personality. Sharing about his connection to literature and poetry, Thien expressed: "I think it is thanks to my sensitivity to things and events that happen in life. Since my junior high school years, when I read works in newspapers, magazines or articles in the UPU international letter writing competition, I really liked it. So whenever I have free time and feel inspired, I write." Thien shared that at that time, he only wrote for fun because he clearly defined his bigger goal and interest as mathematics. “That’s why I chose to major in mathematics. I always put studying first and only write when I have free time and inspiration. Writing and composing poems helps me relieve stress a lot. After tiring hours of studying, I turn to literature to open my heart,” the 9X guy shared.

Later, when he went to university, Thien collaborated with several places and earned money from writing, but this young man still did not neglect his studies. Thien only composed and accepted writing assignments when he had free time. At this time, Thien also began participating in competitions and won many awards. Most recently, at the 2nd Young Literature Competition of Ho Chi Minh City National University, despite having to compete with many writers in the field of social sciences, Thien still excellently won first prize in the short story category and second prize in the essay category.

Dream of becoming a good doctor

Thien pursues literature and natural sciences, which are two unrelated fields. When asked how to balance these two fields, Thien said: "The field of study or upcoming job and literature and poetry are not in the same school, however, I do not let them influence each other. I balance by dividing my time clearly, focusing completely on whatever I do so as not to be distracted." Therefore, Thien maintains good academic results, helping him get a scholarship to pay for tuition. Writing poetry and literature helps Thien earn more money to cover other living expenses. Therefore, during the 6 years of university, Thien was able to earn money to pay for his studies. The 9X guy humorously shared that inside him there are 2 personalities, when working related to science, he is careful, full of scientific thinking and thinking, but when he turns to literature and poetry, he lets his heart soar and is more romantic. “Becoming a good doctor is the biggest dream of my life. Writing helps me mature, think deeply, and know how to behave more calmly and properly,” Thien said. The genres that Thien is pursuing are poetry, short stories, and essays. And the topics that he focuses on are always related to real life, about his hometown, people, and family. Sharing the secret to writing and composing good poems, Thien said: “In anything, if you want to do it well, you must first love it. Then, invest time and effort, delve into it, and devote yourself to it. In particular, I have a habit of taking notes of ideas. Because maybe at that time I don’t have time to write or don’t need it, but there will definitely be a time when I have to use it.”

For Thien, pursuing a scientific career is still the most important. Therefore, in the future, Thien will continue to invest in studying to become a good doctor. At the same time, he will continue writing and hopes to publish his first book. "I don't expect to become a writer or poet, I just want to write when I have time," Thien said. Dr. Ho Khanh Van, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Literature, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, and a judge of the young literature contest, commented: “This is the second time Thien has participated in this contest. The first time, he made a strong impression with his poetic expression, which was very new, unique, profound, and rooted in the roots of national culture, origins, and homeland sentiment. Thien's poetry has a creative combination of words but does not fall into clichés. Therefore, in his first participation, Thien won first prize in the poetry category. In the second time, Thien really surprised the judges because he won a high prize but in a different genre, which is essays and short stories. Thien's writing style is both calm and profound, and has a breakthrough in language, and is creative in the way he thinks about language to express his ideas. It is rare for someone to write in so many genres, each of which is so unique.”
