“We are facing serious risks. The challenge for the world is how do we manage those risks and make sure we still get the huge benefits from it. No one wants to destroy the world,” said CEO Altman, who is on a global tour to discuss AI.

OpenAI's ChatGPT has created a global AI frenzy since its launch late last year. Microsoft has invested around $1 billion in OpenAI.

ChatGPT’s success has also raised concerns. Hundreds of industry leaders, including Altman, signed a letter in May warning that “mitigation of AI-induced extinction risks must be a global priority, on par with other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.”

Mr. Altman also proposed creating a separate AI regulator similar to the IAEA, the United Nations nuclear watchdog, which was created in the years after the United States dropped atomic bombs on Japan at the end of World War II.

Lawmakers around the world are also considering artificial intelligence laws. The European Union is pursuing its first AI law, which could become a global standard in the future. Altman told the US Congress in May that government intervention will be crucial to managing the risks associated with AI.
