The mangrove turtle, also known as the giant land turtle (toothed turtle), is a wild animal listed in the Red Book that is bred and raised at home. Mr. Dang Trung Kien, Binh Khanh Ward, Long Xuyen City, An Giang Province, has raised mangrove turtles in the attic, domesticated and successfully reproduced this wild animal.
Seeing the potential of raising mangroves, Mr. Dang Trung Kien, a farmer in Binh Khanh 7 hamlet, Binh Long ward, Long Xuyen city (An Giang province) took advantage of the empty space in the attic of his house to build a solid mangrove pond.
Mr. Dang Trung Kien's family's mangrove pond has a wastewater treatment system, with an area of 30 square meters.
When building a mangrove tank, Mr. Kien paid special attention to the location of the tank to be cool, avoid direct sunlight; have a drainage system to ensure convenience for regular water changes; the tank is built of sturdy cement, the area or width of the tank is large enough to ensure that there is enough space for the mangrove to move conveniently.
According to Mr. Kien, mangroves are easy to raise, have few diseases, and their food source is easy to find, mainly water spinach, which is very cheap and easy to find, thus saving a part of the raising cost.
On average, mangrove crabs can be sold after 1-2 years of raising, weighing about 5-6 kg. Traders often come to buy them at a stable price of 300,000 - 350,000 VND/kg.
The mangrove turtle, also known as the toothed turtle (big-headed turtle), belongs to group IIB and is a rare wild animal, listed in the Vietnam Red Book. It is allowed to be raised commercially and as an ornamental animal, but must comply with the provisions of the law on protection, conservation, and biodiversity....
The selling price of each mangrove crab is usually around 400,000 VND/cow. In particular, the mangrove crab farming model does not depend much on time, so he can do other jobs, increasing his family's income.
According to statistics, in captivity, the crab can live for more than 35 years. However, each individual crab will be different depending on the environment where the crab lives, the immune system of each individual, the lifespan can increase or decrease.
Up to now, Mr. Kien owns nearly 400 large and small mangrove crabs of all kinds, including 70 parent mangrove crabs.
Mangroves are relatively easy to raise, but if not properly cared for, they will have difficulty producing high yields.
To achieve economic efficiency, mangrove farmers need to change the water in the cage regularly, supplement nutrition for mangroves by changing the diet and choosing fresh vegetables.
Mangroves are wild animals that lay eggs, when the mother mangrove is pregnant, she needs the best care, food and rest.
The eggs of mangrove crabs need to be kept in a place with suitable temperature to be able to hatch. The mangrove crab farming model is a new model with high economic efficiency, which needs to be replicated to develop the local economy.
The mangrove is a wild animal that is in danger of extinction and needs to be preserved. The mangrove is one of the rare animals, according to the Red Book, the mangrove or also known as the toothed turtle (big-headed turtle) belongs to group IIB.
According to regulations, mangroves are wild animals that are restricted from exploitation and use for commercial purposes but are allowed to be raised when of legal origin.
Households that keep pigs in captivity, whether for commercial or ornamental purposes, must go through procedures and have documents proving legal origin...so that the authorities can issue a monitoring book.
Therefore, to make the raising more legal, Mr. Dang Trung Kien, Binh Khanh ward, Long Xuyen city, An Giang province strictly followed the regulations on organizing barns, fully equipped with all kinds of certificates to be allowed to practice.
