American blogger shares 5 destinations solo travelers 'need to be wary of'

Of the more than 80 countries she's visited, there are five destinations that American travel blogger Chloe Jade feels she should be wary of visiting alone.

Chloe Jade is an influential travel blogger based in the US. She produces digital content while traveling around the world, having visited more than 80 countries. Chloe shared with Insider her experiences from her travels and came up with five places she feels are "unsafe and should be avoided by solo travelers."

Pattaya, Thailand

"There are many great places to visit in Thailand, but Pattaya is not a healthy tourist destination for the majority," said Chloe Jade. The female tourist said that this place is no different from an Asian-style "red light district", attracting a number of male tourists who come here just to satisfy their personal needs. This makes her feel that the value of women is not respected.

Jade said she generally feels safe in Asian countries and "Pattaya was a surprise" to her. The blogger commented that other Thai destinations are worth visiting but she would avoid Pattaya next time.

Belgrade, Serbia

Belgrade, Serbia, is the "unsafest" place Chloe has ever felt while traveling. "Maybe it's because I'm American," she says. Chloe says that when locals find out she's from the US, they're quite hostile. This happens so often that she often hesitates to share her nationality, fearing it could be a trigger in Belgrade.

One time, the blogger sat in the back of a taxi and listened to the driver talk about how much he hated America. Chloe was quite scared because she was traveling alone. Before going to Belgrade, the blogger had visited the Balkans without any problems.

Paris, France

Chloe had a terrifying experience with a local man in Paris. She said he "tricked" her into going out for a drink and when she returned to her rented house she felt unwell, covered in cold sweats as if she had been "drugged". Chloe felt "lucky" to have escaped the man.

"The reason I put Paris on the list is because the movies have over-romanticized the city. Like other megacities around the world, Paris has its dangers and women should be careful when traveling alone."

Marrakesh, Morocco

While Marrakesh is an interesting tourist destination and worth visiting at least once in your life, Chloe believes that it also has its share of unsafe corners. Marrakesh is made up of narrow, winding alleys that can be intimidating to walk through alone. Chloe has encountered a few men who looked aggressive while walking through the alleys.

The blogger said she had traveled to many places in the Middle East where women's rights were not respected, but she felt safe there. Because these countries have many areas reserved for women that men are not allowed to enter. "That's not the case in Morocco," Chloe said.

Kingston, Jamaica

Chloe felt comfortable for the most part in Jamaica, but she was often warned by locals about places that were unsafe for tourists. For example, after visiting a few local markets she received a lot of feedback from locals that the places were often unsafe and that newcomers should not go there.

"I really enjoy the markets, but at the same time I feel like I have to be extra vigilant in public places that lack security. At night, anything bad can happen," Chloe shared.
