1 year old boy dies of hand, foot and mouth disease

On May 30, news from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) of Dak Lak province said that the province had just recorded a case of a child dying from hand, foot and mouth disease.

Accordingly, the child who just died is THA (1 year old, residing in Residential Group 1, Thien An Ward, Buon Ho Town, Dak Lak).

According to the report, on May 19, A. developed a high fever of 39 degrees Celsius and a dry cough. Afterwards, the family took A. to a private clinic and was diagnosed with acute pharyngitis, and was given fever-reducing medication three times a day.

Hand, foot and mouth disease often occurs in children under 5 years old.

However, on May 22, A. still had a high fever. After that, the family took him to Hoa Binh General Hospital, Buon Ho Town. On the same day, May 22, A. was transferred to the Central Highlands General Hospital.

Here, doctors diagnosed A. with grade 4 respiratory failure, septic shock, sepsis, and were monitoring for hand, foot, and mouth disease, meningitis, and acute myocarditis.

Despite active treatment by doctors, at 3:30 p.m. on May 22, A. died with a diagnosis of septic shock, sepsis, multiple organ damage, and grade 4 hand, foot, and mouth disease.

According to CDC Dak Lak, child A. is the first death from hand, foot and mouth disease since the beginning of the year in the area.

CDC Dak Lak added that hand, foot and mouth disease is an acute infectious disease caused by a virus of the Enterovirus group. Hand, foot and mouth disease is transmitted from person to person through the digestive tract or contact with saliva, nasal secretions, and broken blisters of the patient. It is common in children under 5 years old, with the highest number of cases occurring between March and May and September and November.
