Quang Ngai Provincial Museum (facility 1) is located in Cam Thanh ward, completed in 2003 with an area of over 30,000m2 . In 2007, the Museum officially opened for people to visit, learn, research science , culture and history of Quang Ngai province in particular and the country in general. After a long period of operation without investment and upgrading, many items of the museum have been seriously degraded and damaged.
Currently, some exterior items such as stone walls and brick floors are broken. The corrugated iron roofs in many places are rusted and rotten. Many walls and display belts inside the museum have peeling paint, leaking, causing mold and dirt. The exhibition area on the second floor of the museum is currently closed to visitors because the items are severely damaged, affecting and making it difficult to preserve images, documents, and artifacts; especially paper documents.
The reason for the deterioration is partly due to years of use. Although the museum has been renovated, it has not been much. In addition, the complicated weather, storms, and prolonged heat have caused severe damage to the museum.
“The museum’s corrugated iron roof has been damaged for many years and has not been repaired, so every time it rains, water leaks from the roof and flows onto the floor. We have placed signs warning visitors not to enter these areas,” said Mr. Nguyen Kim Son, Head of the General Administration Department (Quang Ngai Provincial General Museum).
The museum currently preserves and displays over 20,000 artifacts and over 6,500 valuable documents and images. Each year, the museum welcomes about 70,000 visitors. The serious deterioration after 22 years of construction is a major obstacle to this place playing its role as a space for displaying, preserving and promoting the value of treasures.
Ms. Nguyen Cam Phu, Cam Thanh Ward said: “I hope the Provincial Museum will soon be repaired, upgraded, invested more in infrastructure, and applied more digital transformation. Only then can we attract the younger generation, creating conditions for people to learn about history in more diverse and attractive ways.”
The 13th Provincial People's Council issued Resolution No. 50 dated September 27, 2024 on the expected medium-term public investment plan for the period 2026-2030. In particular, the province will invest in building a new museum and provincial library, aiming to develop the province's cultural sector institutions to be more modern and spacious. Combined with the Provincial Convention and Exhibition Center to become the center of activities, organizing cultural events of the province.
Mr. Phan Van Hoang, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Ngai province, said that investing in and upgrading the Provincial Museum is necessary to develop an exhibition space commensurate with the enormous historical and cultural values that Quang Ngai holds, especially the Sa Huynh culture, helping to better preserve heritage, enhance visitor experience and gradually turn Quang Ngai into a cultural tourism center of the region.
“The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism hopes that in the coming time, the Provincial Museum and Provincial Library projects will soon be implemented. Only then can we do a good job of preserving, displaying and introducing the cultural heritage values and cultural history of the locality, contributing to the socio-economic development of the province,” Mr. Hoang emphasized.
