On May 18, Priscila da Silva Ramos, 37, from Osasco, Sao Paulo, Brazil, took her 9-year-old son to a public health facility for a check-up. The boy felt tired, had a sore throat, vomited, and had other flu-like symptoms, according to the India Times .
A doctor in Brazil has been fired for prescribing chocolate ice cream and playing games on his phone to a 9-year-old patient with a sore throat and vomiting.
However, the doctor there did not examine the boy. Ms. Ramos said that this doctor was unprofessional. Instead of examining the boy's throat, the doctor asked Ms. Ramos if she had seen her son's throat and if it was swollen. The doctor's identity was not revealed by the media.
The doctor then did no further examination and wrote a prescription for amoxicillin, ibuprofen, dipyrone, prednisolone, and N-acetylcysteine. Strangely, the doctor also prescribed chocolate ice cream and playing games on his phone every day.
"He started writing the prescription without checking my son for any illness, without looking for swelling in his throat, without checking his chest with a stethoscope or doing any physical examination," Ms. Ramos said.
"Then he asked my son if he wanted ice cream and he said yes. He asked if it was chocolate or strawberry flavour and my son said chocolate. But I still can't imagine him writing chocolate ice cream on the prescription," Ms Ramos added.
When the doctor gave her the prescription, Ms. Ramos ignored it and went home. The next day, the boy's aunt looked at the prescription and saw the last two lines were ice cream and playing games. This made Ms. Ramos angry. She posted this strange prescription on Facebook and it quickly went viral on social media.
The story has attracted mixed opinions. Some say the doctor was irresponsible, while others think it was a doctor's prank.
However, some people also see the act of prescribing ice cream and playing games in prescriptions as acts of friendliness and humanity towards patients. Some people shared that they had received a prescription from a doctor with the request "take care of yourself, you are very special, hug more".
But whatever the controversy, the doctor has been fired. Osasco city health officials said in a statement that they had fired him from the city's public health care system, according to the India Times .
