According to TechSpot , the scientific community has previously created amazement with water batteries, now there is a new type of battery that is even more impressive. Specifically, a Finnish startup called Polar Night Energy has successfully raised 7.6 million Euros (equivalent to 8.2 million USD) to develop their unique sand battery technology.

This technology uses sand or sand-like material as a medium to store energy in the form of heat, with the potential to become an efficient and cost-effective renewable energy storage solution.

Sand batteries work by using sand heated to over 1,000 degrees Celsius to store excess energy from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. When needed, the heat is released from the sand to provide energy for various purposes such as heating, cooling or generating electricity.

The main advantage of sand batteries is that they use cheap and readily available materials, and can be built underground, saving space and suitable for areas with high real estate values.

Polar Night Energy installed its first sand battery system in Finland in 2022, with a heating capacity of 100 kW and a capacity of 8 MWh. Now the company is working to build an innovative industrial-scale system in Pornainen, Finland, which is expected to store 100 MWh of thermal energy and provide 1 MW of heating capacity, enough to heat an entire town in the country for a week.

Polar Night Energy's sand battery technology promises to provide an efficient and flexible renewable energy storage solution, contributing to promoting the use of green energy and minimizing environmental impact.
