To prove this, Microsoft has released a number of benchmark tests for the new Surface series, with all the results shown on stage showing the new Surface Laptop outperforming its rival MacBook Air M3. Microsoft's record on the Cinebench 2024 platform shows that the Surface Laptop scored 980 points, while the MacBook Air M3 scored 650 points. On the Geekbench 6 platform, the Surface Laptop scored 14,000 points, while the MacBook Air M3 scored 12,000 points.

It’s important to note that these results are from multi-core tests, and it’s unclear what the single-core results would be. Microsoft’s omission of this data raises a lot of questions, such as whether the Surface Laptop could not outperform its Apple rival in this scenario? The answer may only come when Microsoft officially releases the new product to the market.

Back in Microsoft's presentation, the company also mentioned that "real-world performance" on its new laptops continues to be top-notch. To prove it, the company ran the HandBrake ToS program to simulate encoding a 4K video file. The results showed that the Surface Laptop with Snapdragon X Elite took 5 minutes and 8 seconds to complete the task, while the MacBook Air M3 took 6 minutes and 26 seconds.

It’s also worth mentioning that the Surface Laptop 5 with Intel’s 12th-generation Alder Lake chip took 10 minutes and 30 seconds to complete the same test. In other words, the new model has cut video encoding time in half compared to its predecessor.

Since it is a laptop, an important point that users are interested in on the new Surface Laptop is how long the battery will last. In this case, the results performed by Microsoft show that its product also achieved quite impressive numbers. When browsing the web, the Surface Laptop battery was completely depleted after 16 hours and 59 minutes. With the MacBook Air M3, the observed time was 15 hours and 25 minutes. When playing multimedia, the Surface Laptop achieved more than 20 hours and the MacBook Air M3 was 17 hours and 45 minutes.

Finally, it is important to mention artificial intelligence (AI) tasks, which are increasingly popular in today's technology world. For the evaluation, Microsoft used the Procyon AI Computer Vision benchmark platform to record scores of 1,745 and 889 for the Surface Laptop and MacBook Air M3, respectively.

It’s important to note that these results were provided by Microsoft to journalists, meaning they’re just promotional material for the company’s new product. More objective results will be available once the new Surface Laptop reaches independent reviewers, which will begin shipping on June 18.
