Nine Vietnamese people were killed when a seven-seat car plunged off a cliff in an area near the border with Vietnam, according to the Jingxi city government.

Authorities in Jingxi City, Guangxi Province, said on May 19 that 11 people, including nine Vietnamese, were killed when a car fell off a cliff and plunged into a lake below in a mountainous area in Siming Village.

The three survivors included the Chinese driver who was on duty and two Vietnamese citizens. Jingxi authorities said they had informed the Vietnamese consulate in Nanning.

Jingxi authorities are investigating the three survivors, suspecting the incident is related to human trafficking in the border area.

The accident occurred on the morning of May 19 on the road through Tu Minh village, Tinh Tay city, about 5-6 km from the border, when a Toyota Highlander car plunged off a cliff on a mountain road. This is a 7-seater car but was carrying twice the number of people allowed.

Jingxi Emergency Response Center said the vehicle did not fall into a natural lake, but into a nearby coal mine's wastewater reservoir. The vehicle has been towed out of the lake.
