VnExpressVnExpress16/06/2023

The US Major hosted by the US Golf Association has just had new records for round performance and stroke average, along with two holes-in-ones in the same place on the opening day of the 123rd tournament.

This year's US Open took place on the North par 70 course at Los Angeles Country Club, ending round 1 on the morning of June 16, Hanoi time, with Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele at the top of the table, at -8 points.

Fowler had 10 birdies and two bogeys while his fellow American had eight birdies and the rest were all pars. With that form, both finished T1, two strokes ahead of the next two – T3, Wyndham Clark and Dustin Johnson.

By shooting 62s in the opening round, 22 minutes apart, Fowler and Schauffele shared the new 18-hole record in US Open history. The previous mark was 63, set by Johnny Miller in the final round to win the 1963 tournament.

If we look at the history of the entire major quartet, Fowler and Schauffele will match the record set by Branden Grace in the third round of The Open 2017.

This US Open also recorded an opening round average of 71.328, better than the previous ceiling of 72.29 in 1993. This morning's round-up had six players shoot 65 or less. That's the most since the inaugural year in 1985. And for the first time since the first tournament, the tournament has had a worst opening round result that did not touch 80 strokes, when amateur Aaron Wise and Alexander Yang finished bottom of the leaderboard with 79 strokes.

Besides new records or professional milestones, the opening day of the 2023 US Open was also more exciting thanks to two hole-in-ones, belonging to Matthieu Pavon and Sam Burns, both on the 124-yard par-3 15th hole. This is the third time the tournament has had two aces on the same hole in the same round.

Pavon recorded in the morning session, when hitting with a gap wedge commonly used in situations around the green:

Pavon hole-in-one hole 15 par3

Pavon hole-in-one hole 15 par3.

Burns scored in the afternoon, using a sand wedge to escape sand traps.

Burn hole-in-one hole 15 par3

Burn hole-in-one hole 15 par3.

Burns' shot helped US Open history reach the 50th hole-in-one mark. Burns is currently T25 (-1) while Pavon is T56 (+1).
