Ms. Hoang Thi Hoai An (born in 1972) is currently the Deputy Director of Nghe An Continuing Education - Vocational Guidance Center. Recently, Ms. Hoai An was awarded the title of "Outstanding Teacher" in 2024. This is the result of her contributions when working at the continuing education center and teaching ethnic minority languages. Sharing her feelings when receiving this prestigious award, she confided: "This is my happiness and honor. The opportunity to enter continuing education In 1988, when choosing her university aspirations, Ms. Hoai An was hesitant between the Vietnam Agricultural Academy and the Pedagogical College - Vinh University. Ms. An's parents wanted her to pursue a career in education, so she decided to become a teacher. "Looking back, I still feel that I made the right choice. People often say that "the profession chooses the person". It was also fortunate that the profession chose me", Ms. An reminisced. Recalling the time when she was first assigned to practice teaching at Le Hong Phong High School (Nghe An), Ms. Hoai An almost asked to change classes. She recalled: "I was assigned to class 11D - considered a special class of the school. Because of too much pressure, I cried and asked the head of the department for permission to change my homeroom class because I was afraid that I would not be able to complete the task".

After that, the head of the department actively encouraged Ms. An that if every teacher was assigned to a class with obedient and hard-working students, who would be responsible for the students who needed to be disciplined and taught? "And if the teacher only taught the exemplary students, the real ability of that teacher would never be developed," Ms. Hoang Thi Hoai An recalled the old advice. Understanding the problem, Ms. Hoai An immediately adjusted her spirit and started to plan lessons for the students in her homeroom class. At the end of the school year, her 11D class went from being the last class in the school to third place. "Up to now, the students of the first class I was in charge of still often invite me to class reunions on special occasions. From these moments, I have more faith and love for the teaching profession. Because, in the journey of teaching and learning, sometimes the boundary between teachers and students is fragile - I teach them, and they also teach me valuable life lessons," said Ms. Hoai An. Later, Ms. Hoai An was assigned by the Nghe An Department of Education and Training to the Nghe An Continuing Education - Career Guidance Center.

In the early days of teaching, although still somewhat worried, Ms. An realized that continuing education students need teachers who can support and guide them: "In education, heart and love are the keys to success. Therefore, I have constantly improved myself: from pursuing a second degree in English Language to taking additional psychology courses. All are aimed at equipping the best luggage to accompany the students", Ms. An confided. Currently, Ms. Hoang Thi Hoai An is both a Master of Education Management and Deputy Director of Nghe An Continuing Education - Career Guidance Center. She has more than 30 years of experience in education. Life skills class changes many students In 2016, when the remote study-work model of the continuing education sector was introduced, Ms. Hoai An and her colleagues had to face many challenges regarding the effectiveness of this model. At that time, Ms. An proposed to the leadership to develop a project to foster life values, life skills, and talents for students at all levels. The courses will be specific to each age group and each level, suitable for the psychological characteristics of the students. Although many teachers are still concerned about the feasibility of this project, with her belief and caring heart for the teaching profession, Ms. An was determined to put this project into operation. In 2016, about 460 students participated in the course. By 2024, the course had more than 10,000 students.

"The course is built on an experiential and student-centered approach. For life skills courses, we will focus on four skill groups: communication, integration, self-service, and self-protection. As for life values courses, we take love and gratitude as core values," Ms. Hoai An shared. Ms. An opens courses with different names for different ages such as: the journey of growing up, transforming anger, awakening a loving heart, sex education, creative arts, etc. Sharing about the most memorable memory during the course, Ms. An said that during the teaching process, there will be students who are beyond her control. For these students, the most important thing is still calmness, patience, and perseverance. She recalled that in the summer course of 2023, there were two special students: "A quiet, reserved female student. In the first 1-2 days of the course, this female student did not communicate with us at all. And a very hyperactive male student with poor concentration. Many teachers reported to me that they would no longer continue teaching the two students. But I understand that not all students can improve after a few days of studying. I asked the teachers to patiently monitor them. After that, the teachers actively talked and connected with the two students. At the end of the course, both students became more sociable and open. The female student later recorded a clip to thank us. Because after the course, she understood many positive values in life," said Ms. An. The goal of bringing ethnic languages into the education program

In 2004, the Prime Minister promoted the training and fostering of ethnic minority languages for cadres and civil servants working in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. Ms. Hoang Thi Hoai An developed the project "Training and granting certificates of Thai ethnic language to cadres, civil servants, public employees, and teachers of the armed forces working in ethnic minority and mountainous areas of Nghe An province". During the implementation process, Ms. Hoai An and her colleagues collected and researched ancient documents, went to villages to learn about culture and customs to enrich the source of materials for the teaching process. Ms. An also participated as a co-author and editor of 3 sets of documents on ethnic minority languages including Thai Lai Tay, Mong, and Thai Lai Pao to teach ethnic minority people in Nghe An province. "Nghe An is a province with major ethnic minorities such as Thai, Tho, Kho Mu, Mong and O Du. I want to integrate the lives of ethnic minorities more into the community; so I started by teaching cadres, workers, civil servants and armed forces," said Ms. An. With a deep love for indigenous culture, the teacher from Nghe An wishes to make the Thai and Mong languages an elective subject in primary schools. It is not simply a subject, but a journey to preserve the beautiful cultures and customs of ethnic minorities. Not stopping there, Ms. Hoai An also cherishes bigger ambitions in her heart. That is to bring life skills lessons to students in the highlands. Ms. An hopes that she will become a bridge connecting souls, a solid foundation for them to develop further in the future.
