
The elderly in Cam Thanh commune will never forget the event of September 27, 1964 when the mass forces with coconut shell guns and internal forces quickly occupied the commune administrative committee headquarters and together with the revolutionary forces paralyzed the Saigon government apparatus in the villages.
On the night of September 27, the people of Cam Thanh commune gathered at Thanh Nhut communal house to attend a rally to declare Cam Thanh liberated.
The liberation of Cam Thanh commune opened the movement of “Destroy hamlets, break shackles” to liberate rural communes in Hoi An. The liberation of Cam Thanh was not only significant for the army and people of Cam Thanh but also had strategic significance for the revolutionary movement of Hoi An.
Cam Thanh became the base, both the front and the rear of Hoi An during more than 10 years of resistance against the US until the day of national reunification.
Coming out of the war, facing barren land, sour fields, and salty water, the people here carried out another economic "uprising".
Mr. Bui Minh Thuan - Secretary of the Party Committee of Cam Thanh commune said that from a locality that had to regularly receive relief aid during the rainy and stormy season, up to now, in Cam Thanh area, there are only 5 poor households receiving social protection (accounting for 0.2%), and 7 near-poor households (accounting for 0.29%).
In 2020, Cam Thanh commune was recognized as an advanced new rural commune; striving to have 6/6 villages meet the standards of a model new rural village and build a commune that meets the standards of a model new rural village by 2025.
The mangrove forests that once “protected soldiers and surrounded the enemy” in Cam Thanh have now become a highly attractive tourism brand. In 2023, the Bay Mau Coconut Forest Historical and Cultural Relic Site in Cam Thanh Commune was recognized by UNESCO as a “Typical Tourist Destination in Asia – Pacific”.

In 2024, the basket boat experience in Cam Thanh coconut forest was listed in the top 25 most attractive boat experiences in the world. The craft of making bamboo and coconut houses in Cam Thanh has also just been recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a national intangible cultural heritage.
Tourism development has brought great benefits to local communities, creating strong changes and significantly improving people's lives.
In 2023, total revenue from tourism and service activities in Cam Thanh commune will reach about 465 billion VND. Of which, revenue from ticket sales will reach 27.5 billion VND, revenue from accommodation activities will reach more than 71.8 billion VND, and revenue from transportation activities will reach about 91.9 billion VND.
“No one expected that from a poor, desolate countryside, Cam Thanh now has 103 operating accommodation establishments of all types such as hotels, villas, homestays… with more than 1,000 rooms,” said Mr. Thuan.
Mr. Tran Anh - Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Council of Hoi An City said that the Resolution of the City Party Congress has determined since 2005 to build Cam Thanh into a unique village associated with sustainable conservation for the future of an intact ecological space of the coastal estuary.
The effort to build Cam Thanh into an ecological, rich, civilized village is the determination and commitment of everyone in Cam Thanh towards the past and the previous generation to be worthy of the spirit of the homeland uprising.
