Hue City: Urgently harvest rice, bring boats ashore to avoid storm number 5

On August 23, the Office of the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue (PCTT and TKCN) of Hue City said that storm No. 5 (international name Kajiki) is forecast to be a strong storm, with strong winds and heavy rains expected from August 24 to August 27 in the locality. Therefore, units and localities are focusing on implementing storm prevention and control plans.

To be proactive in preventing and fighting storm No. 5, in recent days, farmers in the flood-prone areas of Hue City have taken advantage of the time to harvest rice to avoid the storm with the motto "green house is better than old field".

In Quang Dien commune (Hue city), farmers are busy harvesting rice while the combine harvesters are operating at full capacity. People take advantage of the sunny weather to quickly dry the rice and collect straw.

Mr. Nguyen Anh Cau, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Dien Commune, informed that the whole commune has about 1,500 hectares of summer-autumn rice. Currently, the locality has harvested more than 190 hectares and is estimated to complete more than 300 hectares, reaching nearly 1/3 of the total area before storm No. 5 makes landfall.

According to Mr. Nguyen Anh Cau, many rice fields in the locality have been affected by the early-season flood and have had to be replanted, so they cannot be harvested yet. In addition, the number of harvesters is limited, although they have been mobilized to operate day and night, they still cannot meet the people's rice harvesting needs.

On August 23, the Chairman of the Hue City People's Committee issued an urgent dispatch on the implementation of response to storm No. 5. Accordingly, the Chairman of the Hue City People's Committee requested the Heads of Departments, branches, sectors and Chairmen of the People's Committees of communes and wards to proactively organize close monitoring of forecast information, developments of storms, floods, and promptly direct and implement response work according to the "four on-site" motto to ensure the safety of people's lives and minimize property damage.

Hue City requested the Border Guard force and other units and localities to call on boats to enter safe shelters before 7:00 p.m. today (August 23), and take measures to ensure the safety of boats at the anchorage area.

Urgently carry out pruning and bracing of trees to limit incidents of broken branches and fallen urban trees during heavy rains and strong storms. Request owners of irrigation and hydroelectric dams to deploy plans, ensure safety of works and downstream areas, and operate according to the correct procedures to bring the water level back to the prescribed flood level. At the same time, request units and localities to resolutely evacuate people in dangerous areas.
