VOV.VN - Today at the ASEAN Secretariat headquarters in Jakarta, Indonesia, ASEAN Secretary General Kao Kim Hourn held a press conference to announce the results of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits recently held in Laos.

Secretary General Kao Kim Hun said the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits achieved important results with the adoption of 91 documents, demonstrating the efforts of ASEAN member countries as well as partners in nearly a year of active activities.

Among the key outcomes were ASEAN leaders’ commitment to enhancing connectivity, the digital economy and climate resilience. ASEAN leaders also stressed ASEAN’s central role in regional diplomacy and the importance of clean energy, digitalisation and people-to-people connectivity.

Specific initiatives include the ASEAN-China Plan of Action 2026-2030, the ASEAN-India Digital Partnership Programme, and negotiations on the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement. The 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits also discussed major regional and international issues, including the situation in Myanmar and peace in the South China Sea.

Regarding the issue of Myanmar, the ASEAN Secretary-General said: “ASEAN leaders discussed to find the best solutions to move forward the issue in Myanmar; emphasized the importance of promoting the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus Plan, which remains the main reference for activities to resolve the political issues in Myanmar. ASEAN leaders also emphasized the need to promote support activities for all affected people of Myanmar, including regional efforts with the support of international partners and non-governmental organizations.”

Regarding the East Sea issue, the ASEAN Secretary General said that leaders expressed concern about rising tensions in the East Sea, emphasizing the need for peaceful resolution based on international law.

In the current global and regional context, Secretary-General Kao Kim Hun said that ASEAN leaders emphasized the importance of ASEAN unity and solidarity. ASEAN needs to continue to play a leading role in managing relations with major powers, ensuring that relations with external partners are consistent with ASEAN principles, and affirming the importance of ASEAN centrality in shaping regional and global issues. ASEAN leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Timor-Leste’s integration into ASEAN, noting the progress in implementing the roadmap for accession.
