Today, December 10, at Hoa Lac, Hanoi National University held a ceremony to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Government's decree on Hanoi National University and 117 years of tradition. General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong did not attend, but sent a congratulatory letter to Hanoi National University.

The General Secretary wrote: "On this occasion, on behalf of the Party and State leaders and with personal feelings, I would like to acknowledge, congratulate, commend and thank Hanoi National University for the results it has achieved in recent years, especially since moving its headquarters to the new urban area in Hoa Lac."

In the letter, the General Secretary stated that, inheriting and continuing 117 years of tradition from the Indochina University (1906), Vietnam University (1945) and the General University (1956), after 30 years of construction and development, Hanoi National University has constantly strived and achieved many outstanding achievements, becoming a large multidisciplinary university training and scientific research center, holding a particularly important position in the country, highly appreciated and ranked internationally, playing a core and leading role in the Vietnamese higher education system.

It is known that on December 10, 1993, Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet signed Decree No. 97/CP on the establishment of Hanoi National University on the basis of rearranging and reorganizing a number of universities and scientific research institutes in the Hanoi area. The establishment of Hanoi National University is part of the task of building a number of key national universities, to act as the locomotive and core for the country's higher education, realizing the Party's strategic vision and aspirations for the development of Vietnam's higher education.

"The main machine" for training university lecturers nationwide

Hanoi National University was developed based on two major universities in Hanoi: Hanoi University of Science and Hanoi University of Foreign Languages. Currently, Hanoi National University has more than 5,000 staff. Of which, the total number of scientific staff is 2,739 people; 66 professors, 490 associate professors, nearly 1,700 doctors and doctors of science. Currently, the rate of lecturers with doctoral degrees at Hanoi National University is 62% (twice as high as the national average); the rate of professors and associate professors is 5 times higher than the national average.

Mr. Do Van Chien, Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, on behalf of the Party and State leaders, awarded the First Class Labor Medal to Hanoi National University.

Since 1993, about 280,000 people have graduated from Hanoi National University, including 230,000 bachelors, 43,000 masters and nearly 3,000 doctors.

In particular, more than 60% of the postgraduate students of Hanoi National University are lecturers from universities and research institutes across the country. This figure shows that Hanoi National University is a place to train "mainframes", training lecturers for many universities across the country.

According to Professor Le Quan, Director of Hanoi National University, after 30 years of promoting autonomy and high self-responsibility, Hanoi National University has achieved many important achievements and is making constant efforts to adapt to the new context. Hanoi National University has always been creative, pioneering, training many talents for the country, proposing and successfully piloting many important policies, pioneering in innovation of higher education, deserving to be the flag, the core of Vietnam's higher education.

In recognition of the outstanding achievements of Hanoi National University in contributing to the cause of building socialism and defending the country, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Government's promulgation of the Decree on Hanoi National University and 117 years of tradition, the President decided to award the First Class Labor Medal to Hanoi National University.

Currently, Hanoi National University has 37 units, including: Hanoi National University; 9 universities, 5 scientific research institutes established by the Prime Minister; 2 schools, 2 faculties and 1 affiliated research institute; 2 training and research centers; 15 service units. From having only more than 50 training majors, up to now, Hanoi National University is implementing 190 undergraduate training programs, 198 master's training programs, and 118 doctoral training programs.

In the early years of its establishment, the training scale of Hanoi National University was only about 20,000 full-time students and 50 graduate students. To date, the training scale of Hanoi National University is 71,000 students, including about 55,000 full-time university students, 5,000 graduate students, more than 1,000 graduate students, 1,000 international students and more than 10,000 high school students.
