Previously, the first case had undergone a successful kidney transplant surgery, and the health condition of this transplant is currently progressing well, with the transplant recipient's health indicators returning to normal. All kidney transplants were performed at Can Tho Central General Hospital, with professional support from Cho Ray Hospital (HCMC).
According to information from the hospital, both kidney transplant recipients were young patients with end-stage chronic kidney failure, with many accompanying diseases such as heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, heart valve regurgitation, etc. After a period of stable medical treatment, the kidney transplant was performed.
Male patient DVB (28 years old, in Hau Giang), previously had end-stage chronic kidney failure and was undergoing regular dialysis in Hau Giang. After a period of intensive treatment, many inter-hospital consultations between the medical team of Can Tho Central General Hospital and Cho Ray Hospital, the kidney transplant surgery was decided; the kidney donor was the patient's biological father.
The second case of kidney transplant is a female patient PTKT (38 years old, in Kien Giang province), discovered to have end-stage chronic kidney failure and is undergoing regular dialysis in Kien Giang; the kidney donor is her biological sister.
The surgical team of more than 20 doctors and nurses from the two hospitals coordinated the surgery, led by Associate Professor, Dr. Thai Minh Sam - Vice President of the Vietnam Urology and Nephrology Association.
Surgeons performed a laparoscopic procedure to remove the donor's left kidney and transplant it into the recipient's right iliac fossa. The procedure took a long time, lasting 5-6 hours.
Currently, the health status of the two kidney donors is stable and they have been discharged from the hospital and are being followed up for follow-up examinations. For the kidney recipient, after the kidney transplant, the kidney function test results have returned to almost normal, and they are being closely monitored and are preparing to be discharged from the hospital and come back for follow-up examinations as scheduled.
According to the leader of Can Tho Central General Hospital, the hospital is currently completing procedures according to regulations to perform the next two kidney transplants, and a number of other cases are also registering to perform the kidney donation and transplant procedure.
After the first kidney transplant performed at the hospital (also the first in the Mekong Delta region), performed in May 2024, Can Tho Central General Hospital is now the 26th kidney transplant center in Vietnam - also becoming the first organ donation registration point for humanitarian purposes at a hospital in the Mekong Delta.
