Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation from his residence at Rideau Cottage, Ottawa on January 6.

Mr Trudeau explained that "internal battles" within the ruling Liberal Party had left him unable to lead the party into the next election.

The announcement comes after weeks of mounting pressure from within his own Liberal Party and plummeting national poll numbers for Mr Trudeau.

"This country deserves a real choice in the next election and I have realized that if I have to fight internally, I cannot be the best choice in that election," Mr. Trudeau declared.

Prime Minister Trudeau announced that he has asked the Liberal Party to initiate the process of selecting a new leader.

Mr Trudeau took power in 2015 and led the Liberals to two more victories in 2019 and 2021, becoming one of Canada's longest-serving prime ministers.

During his first two terms as prime minister, Trudeau introduced reforms in the Senate, signed a new trade deal with the United States and introduced a carbon tax to reduce Canada's greenhouse gas emissions.

Under the Canadian Constitution, the country must hold an election no later than October 20.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party is trailing the opposition Conservative Party in opinion polls, with the gap widening. Recent polls even show the Conservatives more than double the Liberals.

The Liberal Party is expected to lose the upcoming election, with many voters polled admitting they want to see change after 10 years of Trudeau in power.

Support for Mr Trudeau began to wane two years ago amid public discontent over high prices and a housing shortage.

According to poll results, the conservatives are fully capable of winning more than 50% of the seats in Parliament to form a government on their own, ending nearly 10 years of rule by the Liberal Party.

Amid rising inflation and criticism of government policies, opposition leaders and some Liberal MPs have called on Trudeau not to remain in power for another term.

Previously, Prime Minister Trudeau admitted that he often thinks about giving up the position of prime minister every day, but he affirmed that he will stay in office until this year's election.

"I think about quitting every day. It's a crazy job and I've made personal sacrifices," Trudeau said early last year.

However, he claims he is not one to give up when faced with difficulties.

"It's very difficult work, sometimes not great work. But the path we're on is so precarious, democracies are under such attack all over the world," he said.

Mr. Trudeau affirmed: "I entered politics not to be famous, not for personal reasons, but because I wanted to serve and I knew I had something to contribute."
