The event was jointly organized by the Vietnam Musicians Association, the Vietnam Stage Artists Association, the Institute for Preservation and Development of Ethnic Culture, and the Vietnam National Traditional Theatre, to honor a "giant tree" of the art of Cheo.
Musician Hoang Kieu, real name Ta Khac Ke, from Hung Yen, born in Hanoi, has been involved in traditional opera for more than half a century, and has taught and trained many generations of Cheo artists and musicians for more than 30 years. He is recognized as the pioneer, laying the foundation and shaping the musical language for modern Cheo. Dr. Tran Dinh Ngon said: “Musician Hoang Kieu is one of the first people to compose background music for Cheo, creating a model for future generations to follow.”
At the seminar, many experts and artists analyzed Hoang Kieu's special mark in the play Suy Van , a work considered the pinnacle of creativity in 20th century Cheo music. People's Artist Thanh Ngoan shared: "His music in this play is so smooth that I thought it was an ancient Cheo play. It became the soul of the work and brought Suy Van to great success."
Musician Giang Son, his daughter, proudly said: “My father was the first great arranger for the Cheo orchestra, combining traditional music with classical arrangement techniques, ahead of his time.” Many veteran artists such as People’s Artist Thuy Ngan, People’s Artist Doan Thanh Binh… affirmed that Suy Van ’s music has supported the souls of actors and become the standard for professional Cheo theater.
Besides Suy Van , Hoang Kieu's legacy is also a series of valuable research works such as Studying ancient Cheo melodies , Vietnamese tones and traditional music , which still have application value in composing, training and performing today. Associate Professor, Dr. Ha Hoa emotionally shared: "He is a shining example, a compass that guides me in both personality and scientific research".
The talk show not only commemorates the talented musician, but also evokes the spirit of preserving and promoting the identity of Cheo, so that the breath of Suy Van and the mark of Hoang Kieu will last forever.
