(Dan Tri) - Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Hoang Ngan recounted the ups and downs of Metro Line 1 over the past 17 years and shared his emotions when attending the inauguration ceremony, seeing Ho Chi Minh City residents lining up to go to work by metro from 5am.
Ho Chi Minh City residents use Metro Line 1 to go to school and work on the first morning of the week.
At the workshop "New Era, Era of Rising of the Vietnamese People - Issues for Ho Chi Minh City and the Southeast" held on December 23, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Hoang Ngan, Assistant Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, shared his emotions when witnessing the Metro Line 1 of Ho Chi Minh City come into operation and be welcomed by the people. After 17 years of ups and downs, the dream of the first urban railway line of Ho Chi Minh City has been realized. "Yesterday, my emotions were overwhelmed when I attended the inauguration ceremony of Metro Line 1. And today, I was even more moved when I received images of many people carrying backpacks and lining up to go to work by metro from 5am. People are starting to feel and use smart and modern means of transport and this opens up many hopes for the city in the coming period", Associate Professor Dr. Tran Hoang Ngan expressed. Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Hoang Ngan recounted that Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien) was approved in 2007, officially started construction in 2008 and is expected to be operational in 2018. However, the journey of Metro Line 1 is not a straight line. "There were times when the project had to stop because we had ambitions to extend the route, modify the scale, and modernize. There were also design errors, legal procedural problems, and many other issues. But in the end, with the efforts of the Party Committee, the government, the people of the city, and the support of the Central Government, those challenges were left behind," said Mr. Tran Hoang Ngan. On the first day of commercial operation, Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien) attracted a large number of passengers, making the train cars crowded from morning to night. According to data from the Urban Railway Company No. 1, on the first day of operation, Metro Line No. 1 served nearly 150,000 passengers. Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien Metro is the first metro line built and put into operation in Ho Chi Minh City with a length of 19.7 km connecting the center of District 1 with the eastern areas such as Binh Thanh and Thu Duc City. Metro Line No. 1 not only helps reduce traffic pressure on major routes such as Hanoi Highway (now Vo Nguyen Giap Street) but also brings many economic, social and environmental benefits. In the beginning, Metro Line No. 1 operates from 5am to 10pm every day, the first trip departs at 5am and the last trip departs at 10pm with 9 trains. Each train carries a maximum of 930 passengers (including 147 seats and 783 standing seats) with an interval of 8-12 minutes/trip, a total of 200 trips per day. Speed 110km/h (elevated section) and 80km/h (underground section).
