Perplexity AI Teams Up With More Than a Dozen New Media Partners

(CLO) Startup Perplexity AI announced Thursday (December 5) that it has added more than a dozen new media partners, including the Los Angeles Times and The Independent, to its program to share advertising revenue with publishers.


The new partners span regions such as Japan, Spain, and Latin America, including prominent media companies such as Prisa Media and Newspicks. These partners join Perplexity’s existing partners such as TIME, Der Spiegel, and Fortune.

“With these new partners, Perplexity can provide more relevant and rich information to users from different cultures and regions. Their participation ensures our feedback is comprehensive and insightful,” the company said in a statement.

Perplexity launched the partnership program in July to share advertising revenue from interactions using publishers’ content. In addition, publishers are provided access to Perplexity’s API (application programming interface), which allows software to interact with each other, and provides data analytics tools to track trends and content performance.

Perplexity, backed by tech giants like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and AI chip leader Nvidia, is one of several startups trying to disrupt Google’s dominance in online search, testing ads on its AI-powered search platform.

However, Perplexity is facing legal challenges from major publishers. Dow Jones and the New York Post, owned by News Corp, sued the company in October, accusing Perplexity of "massive unauthorized copying of copyrighted content."

In addition, the New York Times has also sent a notice asking Perplexity to "cease and desist" from using the newspaper's content for generative AI purposes.

The expansion of its partner program shows Perplexity’s ambition to create a sustainable partnership model with publishers. However, the current legal disputes could affect the company’s reputation and future expansion strategy.
