Who should limit onion intake?

Many people love eating onions while others dislike onions due to their strong smell.

Onions contain a lot of water and have a very low vegetable fat content. In 100 grams of onions there are about 40 calories, 1.1 grams of protein, 146 mg of potassium, 4 mg of sodium and many other important nutrients, according to the health website Healthline (USA).

The nutrients in onions have anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory effects and help control blood sugar.

Health experts recommend that people with Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease, avoid eating onions. Crohn’s disease can cause inflammation anywhere in the intestines, but it most commonly occurs in the small intestine and colon. This long-term inflammation causes a host of unpleasant symptoms, including abdominal pain, fatigue, fever, diarrhea, weight loss, and more.

In more severe cases, people with Crohn's disease may experience kidney stones, anemia, or inflammation in other areas of the body, such as the liver, eyes, or skin. Although the cause of Crohn's disease is unknown, certain foods can worsen symptoms during a flare-up, including onions.

This is because onions are high in FODMAPs, which can make Crohn’s symptoms worse. FODMAPs are short-chain carbohydrates, made up of several sugars linked together. However, these sugars cannot be digested by the intestines, causing unpleasant symptoms such as bloating, gas or stomach pain.

Additionally, when Crohn's disease flares up, people will need to reduce their fiber intake. That means they need to stay away from raw vegetables, including onions.

100 grams of onions contain about 1.7 grams of fiber. Although this amount of fiber is not too high, people with the disease should limit their fiber intake until their digestive symptoms subside. They should also follow a low-FODMAP diet.

Specifically, when symptoms are flaring, people with Crohn's need to temporarily limit FODMAP foods such as onions, garlic, wheat, lentils and foods high in lactose and fructose. Following this diet can effectively help reduce bloating and discomfort in the intestines, according to Healthline .
