While China Mobile recorded a modest 2% growth in mobile data traffic, India’s Reliance Jio grew 24%, followed by China Telecom (24%) and Airtel (23%), according to research firm Tefficient. This helped Jio retain its position as the world’s No. 1 mobile data carrier.

The shift reflects 5G’s role as a growth catalyst in emerging markets like India, where both Jio and Airtel are leveraging 5G technology to spur data consumption.

In the second quarter of fiscal 2025, Jio had approximately 148 million subscribers switching to 5G, accounting for about 34% of the carrier’s wireless data traffic. It also has the largest 5G user base outside of China.

According to Jio, during the same period, the company's total data traffic reached approximately 45 exabytes thanks to a combination of 5G users and households.

Additionally, Jio is also the world's fastest growing fixed wireless carrier with over 2.8 million AirFiber connections, demonstrating a diversified growth strategy beyond mobile services.

Aggressive 5G rollout and rapid subscriber migration to the new network helped Jio achieve sustainable growth.

As 5G technology becomes more popular, carriers will focus on improving network infrastructure and expanding user bases to strengthen their position in the global market.
